Jay,
My motor is a 355 two relief
fattops 305 58cc heads opened up for 2.02&1.60
valves, they have been ported & polished.
I'm using a comp cams 292 501 lift set straight
up which gave me the best ETs. The intake is a
performer rpm with a one inch open spacer. I'm
using a 650 double pumper Holley. This is in a
S10 pickup with a 400 turbo trans. and 3000 stall
converter. This thing is extremely wild all through
the rpm range at 6000 shift lite, the biggest
problem is it doesn't want to idle in gear. I've
changed power valves and jets but nothing seems
to work, my timing is 34degrees total at 1500rpm.
Before I put these heads on because of a valve
spring breakage in my old head's this ran good
and never had a problem idling in gear. Is my
carb choice too small for the extra comp. I gained?
Also the heads have been cc'd to 62ccs. Please
help I don't need any problems at the staging
lights.
Thank you, Rick
PS - I also have to run with
the idle air adjustment almost all the way out
just to get to idle for any length of time, and
jet changes don't help. The old heads where 75cc's
the compression was way too low.

Vacuum leak, vacuum leak, vacuum leak. Did I mention I think
you have a vacuum leak? All of the symptoms you describe can
be caused by a vacuum leak. Check the baseplate of the carb
first and make sure the various vacuum ports are plugged if
your not using them. Also, spray some carb cleaner around
the intake manifold while the engine is running, particularly
at the port entrances, if the idle speeds up Voila!! You found
your vac..........
Hope this helps, Jay.
