I have a 69 Chevy Nova that
had a 355 c.i small block, 12.5:1 compression
motor in it. Car weight is 3000 lbs, I have
a powerglide in it with the 1.82 gears and 4000
stall converter. Car ran 11.50's in quarter
with 1.76 60's. I'm rebuilding the motor to
a 383 c.i, 12.5:1 compression and was also thinking
of changing the tranny gears to the 1.76.
Would this gear change help me?
Thanks,
Jeff Wilson

Jeff,
The 1.82 planetary is originally out of a
six cylinder powerglide unit it has pretty small gears,
pins, bearings ect it’s not very strong. The 1.76
planetary is out of a V-8 application. The gears are much
larger and stronger but the ratio difference is very slight,
you probably won’t even notice. The big difference
is that the 1.76 is much more difficult to break! Your new
motor combo will have much more torque so this gear swap
is a good idea!
Thanks,
Mike
