Racers test at zMax before 4-wide nationals

Before the NHRA racers return to zMax Dragway for the April 27-29 NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals several teams were at a test session on Wednesday and Thursday.

During the two-day test session, Mooresville, NC, native Tanner Gray took advantage of springtime temperatures and track conditions that will emulate those of the upcoming Four-Wide Nationals.

Gray, who won the 2017 NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway for his family-owned Gray Motorsports team, was joined at testing by two of the winningest Pro Stock drivers at zMAX Dragway, KB Racing drivers Greg Anderson and Jason Line. Pro Mod driver Rickie Smith and Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Angie Smith were among other drivers participating in the two-day shakedown.

Greg Anderson, a two-time four-wide winner at zMAX Dragway, emphasized the importance of testing with a stacked field in this year’s Pro Stock class.

“It finally warmed up and we’re out here learning a lot and we’re going to need to,” said Anderson. “Competition is tough right now in Pro Stock so we need to find a couple hundredths, which is harder to do than say these days. All you can do is try and so far it’s been a good test. We’re looking forward to four-wide and will get a practice run at four-wide when we go to Vegas and should be ready to go once we get here.”

The NHRA’s national event at Las Vegas on April 6-8 will be on the newly finished four-lane track at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Fans can meet Cruzer and win some Snap-on prizes at Vegas

After time in the shop, Cruz Pedregon and team have the Snap-on Toyota Funny Car ready to go for the inaugural four-wide event in Las Vegas.

“Being a part of history and running four-wide at The Strip will be a fun, new challenge, and we're looking forward to it," Cruz says. "To get ready, we took some time to study that intake valve break we had last weekend, and we've got the car set to make more successful runs in Vegas. I had my 500th career start at this track, and fans will remember the 2016 wheelstand … I know I do. So, we plan to make new memories, with even better numbers, while keeping the car on the ground."

Crew Chief Aaron Brooks says, "We've got the El Guapo body loaded to go after El Jefe took the heat from a valve issue in Gainesville. I'm feeling good about where we're heading…looking forward to the new four-wide format and a solid Q1 to set the stage for consistent runs in Vegas."

Cruz took time before the race to meet customers of the team's primary sponsor, Snap-on. Leading up to the weekend, he's encouraging fans to come out to the track and take photos with him, the team, haulers or the Snap-on Funny Car for the opportunity to score prizes from Snap-on Tools by posting to social media using the hashtag #SnaponCruzin.

DENSO to sponsor Millican at Vegas

At the upcoming DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas, DENSO’s logo will wrap around Clay Millican’s Top Fuel dragster to celebrate the longstanding relationship between Millican, his team sponsor Parts Plus, and DENSO. DENSO Products and Services Americas, Inc., an affiliate of global automotive supplier DENSO Corp., is sponsoring Millican at the April 6-8 weekend race.

DENSO and Millican also support each other off the track. Millican, an advocate of road safety, helped to promote DENSO’s safety efforts in North America with a 10-city mobile road tour in 2017. Additionally, Millican has been a featured guest of DENSO’s at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit -- where he spoke to youngsters about safe driving and his racing career, and at AAPEX in Las Vegas.

Off the track (Comb not included)

Kookie’s Kar, the long-lost T-bucket hot rod credited with starting the nationwide craze in the 1950s, will be on the auction block at Dana Mecum’s 31st Original Spring Classic to be held May 15-19 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

Built by the late Norm Grabowski, the car was a hit in the old private detective series 77 Sunset Strip as actor Edd Byrnes’ car. Kookie’s Kar, as it came to be known, is an icon among historically significant custom cars.
