Above: Bobby Cole (near lane) had an impressive outing at Atlanta, qualifying sixth, then getting past ORSCA stars Jack Barfield and Tim Lynch after an opening-round bye to reach the semis against his car’s former owner Hill. Here, Hill gets away first with a big holeshot, sending Cole back to Memphis a little earlier than he’d hoped.

Hitman Strikes Again

Just a couple of weeks after picking up his first ADRL Extreme 10.5 win, Mike “The Hitman” Hill returned to his Outlaw 10.5 roots and racked up another Year One Outlaw Racing Street Car Association (ORSCA) eighth-mile title May 18-20, at Atlanta Dragway.

“For the track conditions, it was so iffy this weekend, we were pretty happy with that,” Hill said after going 4.754 at 155.06 mph and leading stripe-to-stripe in the final against number-one qualifier Chuck Ulsch. “It ended up being a one-lane track and the right lane was definitely working better for us.”

Joining Hill in victory lane was Limited Street star Darrin Hoyle, along with David Reese after an absolutely dominating performance in EZ Street and Dustin Mewbourn in this year’s new Modified Street class. Index class winners included Phillip Sexton in 5.30, defending 6.0 class champion Michael Strickland and Nathan Wells, who finished on top of a 51-car 7.0 field.

In Saturday night’s special, quarter-mile Year One competition, Jon Phillips earned another Open class win, Drew Rogers took the 10.0 title, ORSCA regular Kevin Thompson won in 11.0, John Cox was the 12.0 winner, and Mel Abney prevailed in a double-breakout 13.0 final round.

Outlaw 10.5

Chuck Ulsch of Clarksville, MD, qualified first in Mickey Thompson Outlaw 10.5 with a 4.473-seconds pass at 167.59 mph, then had a bye in round one before taking out Todd Moyer, a redlighting Jimmy Blackmon and Ken Rainwater in the semis to reach the final against Hill where he lost traction early.

The hits just keep on coming for The Lynch Mob, led by driver Tim Lynch and tuner Steve Petty. In this third-place qualifying effort on Saturday night, Lynch went 4.478 at an all-time high 178.83 mph for an Outlaw 10.5 car over the eighth mile. The Woodstock, GA-based team never did come close to backing up the speed for an official record in eliminations, however, ultimately bowing out in the quarter-finals to Bobby Cole.

In Atlanta, Richard Sexton, the other half of the dynamic duo running out of Gil Mobley’s Outlaw 10.5 garage, had his new Vanishing Point-built ’06 GTO out for just its third race and qualified fourth before falling in round three to Ken Rainwater. The car is generating at least a little controversy as its one-piece nose seems to violate ORSCA’s rule calling for a separate hood from a car’s front fenders and bumper.
