Sportsman car classes

Super Pro, the quickest of the d-y-o brackets had a big field at the opener which bodes really well for the rest of the year. At the end of five rounds of eliminations, Bob Doyle and the Z-Case Datsun scored a big win in his second season in the class, having moved over from Super Gas, over class rookie Steve Taylor’s blown dragster. Pro ET was also a bumper affair, and with the loss of over 2 days worth of qualifying sessions, many teams were consulting their logbooks from previous seasons. The last man standing was Keith Herbert and his sweet Plymouth Sport Fury over Jon Turner’s similarly immaculate Cuda in a match-up made in Pentastar heaven.
After a third place finish in 2008, the 2007 Super Gas champion Jon Morton kicked off his campaign to regain the number one plate in fine fashion with a win over a redlighting Stuart Doignie in the final round. Mort didn’t do as well in Super Comp, but a runner-up finish in the 8.90 class represented a pretty good return for Benson’s finest. Having popped a motor in a huge finishline nitrous explosion towards the end of last season, Colin Lazenby returned to Street Eliminator competition with a mammoth nitrous combination under the bonnet of his 56 Chevrolet, although no one was able to quite ascertain just how big the new bullet was. Whatever the size, it clearly works as Lazenby set low ET of each qualifying session and round of eliminations, with an 8.278 best coming in the final round victory over Jeff Meads.
