On the other side of the ladder, Mike Saiki beat Orban (8.948/157.23 to 9.055/`52.72) and Tyack and then took a bye into the finals. Saiki’s 157.23 was a possible speed record.
The final brought together two of the winningest heads-up racers on the West Coast, both past champions and both driving nitrous-assisted big block Chevy-powered vehicles. Raygoza had already set the e.t. record earlier, while Saiki had set the mph record. The two cars staged and when the ambers flashed it was Raygoza leaving first, .074 to saiki’s .259. It looked like it wasn’t going be close, but Saiki gave it all he had and clicked off the quickest e.t. in the short history of Limited 10.5, an 8.756 at 158.84, but it wouldn’t be enough to catch Raygoza`s 8.859 at 156.14.
What a final! So Raygoza got the win and the e.t. record and Saiki took runner-up and the MPH Record.
