The almost-twin 1957 Chevys of John Scialpi (near) and Tony Marino.

Arizona’s Joe Alsworth was #10 at 6.626/178.35. Tim Henry was on hand helping out Mike Bowman and the car really sounded like it was ready but still only came up with times of 6.722, 210.04 mph and #11. Tony Marino’s look-alike ‘57 (to John Scialpi) got down the tricky course at 6.759, 198.81 mph. Wayne Glasgow ran a 7.231/188.31 and Canadian Jay Syvertsen just could not get a handle on things during qualifying but filled out the field at 8.84, 125 mph.

Right away in the first race of the first round of Pro Street, upsets were in the making as Hairston, who looked strong during his three qualifying passes, had clutch problems and the car would not hold on the starting line giving Jay Syvertsen’s ‘38 Chevy an instant win when the red light came on for Hairston. Syvertsen finally got his primered ride down the track though a fine fashion at a 6.373/232.19, which had to be his best pass ever since he bought this car.

Veteran shoe Scialpi laid down a .018 RT with his Redline Oil-backed ‘57 and drove it all the way to victory at 6.386, 222.44 mph over Mike Bowman, who had traction problems right away and ran an in-and-out-of-it 7.064/202.76.

Joe Alsworth laid a big holeshot on John Mihovetz but horsepower won, at 6.606, 229.20 mph over Joe’s 9.644/149 as he clicked it way early. Both Randy Walker and Wayne Glasgow had some major traction woes but Randy recovered first to the tune of 6.748/197.48 and the win.
