STOCK

The most impressive performance in the Sportsman ranks came from first-time Stock Eliminator winner Kevin Cour (right). He towed his refrigerator white 2010 Mustang A/SA across the U.S. from Flanders, NJ. He completed a rare double by qualifying his A/SA '10 Mustang number one in Stock Eliminator with a 10.018 on an 11.00 index and then driving through a killer field of Stock racers to meet and beat number 12 qualifier and ten-time National event winner Jim Waldo driving his A/S Firebird.

Cour’s closest race came in the semifinals against three-time national event winner Bill Bushmaker. Cour’s better RT, a .039 to a .050 for Bushmaker, combined with a 10.172 on a 10.17 dial to defeat Bushmaker's excellent 12.030 on a 12.02 dial. The win earned Cour his first trip to a national event final where he sealed the deal with a win over Waldo in a double-breakout affair. Cour ran a .0003-under 10.127 at 127.90 mph on a 10.13 dial that easily covered Waldo’s .026-under 10.204/130.39 on a 10.23 dial.

COMP ELIMINATOR

For a field of just 24 cars, there were plenty of Comp Eliminator cars over 190 mph. The two quickest were the AA/AA of Alan Ellis and the AA/AT driven by Mark Wulf.

In all there were four cars in the field that ran over 200 mph. The 23-T bodied roadster driven by Mark Wulf was the quickest and fastest with a best ET of 6.509 and a best speed of 219.56!

Comp winner Alan Ellis was right behind Wulf on the speed and ET charts. His T-bodied roadster ran a best of 6.571/208.36 on his way to his second Comp win of the 2010 season and his third overall. He also was a winner in 2007 at the Phoenix event.

In the first round, Ellis wheeled his A/AA entry to victory over Dennis Myers and then advanced automatically when Randy Jones fouled by five-thousandths. The next round he was better at the starting line and took a small CIC penalty to put Brandon Huhtala and his C/Altered on the trailer.

It was an all “Nostalgia” semifinal matchup as Ellis staged his altered against the injected alky-burning, SBC-powered, front-motored digger of fellow Division 7 competitor Dean Carter. Carter left first but Ellis powered past his opponent mere inches before the finish line stripe.

The final round was a little anti-climatic when Glen Treadwell, who was appearing in his 15th final round, gave Ellis the win when he was away early (-.056 bulb) and Ellis scored the easy win.
