Next up saw the return of the "Northwest Hitter", Bucky Austin, once again on the start line at Mission, only this time it was as tuner and crew chief on the Plymouth Arrow partly owned by Cruz Pedregon (he ran it as the Pisano tribute car at this year's MM). Mark Hentges was Bucky's pilot on this occasion and he laid down a nice clean pass, but alongside Mark was Tim Boychuk in the TLD '77 Firebird. The Roland Leong tuned hotrod started the weekend with a very strong 5.72! It was a tall order to follow that run, but Mark Sanders gave it a good try with a 5.83 in the next pair, Mr. Explosive running straight and true with Jake Sanders backing up his form shown in testing. In the other lane, Todd Losenko was being challenged by traction and lost.
The final pair struggled to make it down the track; Tom Padilla, he of the flying body funny car at the March Meet earlier this year, was fighting all kinds of issues, and in the other lane was TAFC standout Clint Thompson in his beautiful brand new Mustang. This was the first go at a full pass with this machine, and the tune was not quite there.
The other two funny car classes were those of the Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Cars, a Canadian association mostly based in Alberta, and the Northwest BB/FC Association running out of the Pacific NW. To add to the fun, MRP decided to run one from each association in each pair down the track to get a bit of rivalry going for the fans to enjoy and be part of. Both classes run a 6.90 index, so they were well matched and it proved to be good fun for the crowd. Number one qualifiers from this session were Randy Parker in the incredible 'Photo Op' ‘78 Datsun for the NW guys and Ron Sekura in his battle scared ‘82 Trans Am for the Canadians.
