Sportsman Car classes

The weekend for the racers in the heads up Super Modified competition looked as if they would be playing second fiddle to Nigel Payne who had qualified low and seemed to be just besting fellow finalist Andy Hone at pretty much every step apart from the one that mattered when Hone wheeled his Ford Granada Scorpio to a 7.494/182 to Payne’s 7.575/179.

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator’s Ian Hook came into the final round seemingly chasing Brian Payne’s late model Mustang that had run deep into the 7s with a 7.79 in the opening round of eliminations for class low ET and a 7.9 in the semis whilst Hook was stuck in the low 8s. However, Payne dropped close to half a second off his final four pace and Hook lit the win light with an 8.267 to Payne’s 8.352, although the latter still maintains a healthy lead in the class points chase.

Reigning Super Pro ET champion Barry Giles needed to make a move in the points if he was to defend his title, and a semifinal defeat of points leader John Atkinson was underlined by the event win over Pete Walters in an all dragster final round match up.
