Beale wasn’t the only previous champion with first round woes. Last season’s champ, Russ Berens, threw away a .002 reaction by breaking out by .06 on his 12.00 index and 2010 Champion Clay Kossuth red lighted away his chance at a win.

Some notable first round winners were Dick Monaco with a stellar .006 light, Bob Lister and Cedar Falls, Iowa, winner Tom Hoffman as well as Steven Glubke with .02 reactions. Jeff Frees and his wheel standing ‘64 Plymouth lit up the scoreboards with a 10.00 on his 10.00 index.

Round two saw more action as even more fans poured through the Cordova gates. Dennis Eudaley and Jerry Kuenster both took their 409-powered 1959 El Caminos to wins, Jerry running a 12.00 on his 12.00 index.
