The legal Pro Mod category featured a record number of entries with a  $10,000 to win prize. After three full days of qualifying there were still 28 runners who answered the first round call Sunday, and during first round action no less than seven winners ran in the 5-second range.

In the Magna Fuel XDR/TT5 eighth-mile runs, two of our favorites were deep into the competition. Event sponsor Chris Alston powered his ’64 Nova into the semifinals with a solid 4.35 at 175.57 mph.  And Surprise, Arizona’s Dave Singletary looked to be a finalist too with his 732 cubic inch Camaro running nitrous oxide. A weird red light start marred the evening for Dave, keeping him out of the semifinals.

Outlaw Pro Mod round two, found Maggio taking the 5.66 win over the turbocharged Chevelle of Rich Zehring. Due to no-shows and breakage from qualifying, some cars advanced by making singles: John Stanley, Eric Dillard at 5.59, and Australia’s Mouhayet at 5.65.

Moving ahead to round 3, Maggio used a bye to advance with a 5.66 at 261.12. Mouhayet tried but failed to take out Dillard with the latter recording a 5.57/266.35. John Stanley (.046 RT) drove a great race with the Stanley & Weiss Cadillac Pro Mod, but Turky al Zafari’s turbocharged ’68 Camaro went flying by with a strong 5.56 at 270 mph.

After fourteen hours of racing and two evening crashes, the Track Officials called another halt to the action at 8:15 p.m. This meant all final runs would be contested on the sixth day of the event, Monday!

In the highly featured Outlaw Pro Mod division, three cars remained in competition for the $20,000 First Place money: Maggio, Dillard, and al Zafari.

In the semifinals, Maggio red lit away his chances, as he needed about a tenth to stay with the top two. Dillard eased the beautiful Camaro down the track and into the money run. Zafari, having a single bye run did likewise. The final was somewhat anti-climactic as Dillard broke and al Zafari cruised through the course at 115 miles per hour to take the Top Prize back to Ball Ground, Georgia.
