When it was time for the second round Friday night the combination of high humidity and temperature put a lot of moisture into the air and on the track, so the track and DRO officials agreed to postpone the second round of qualifying until Saturday afternoon. On Saturday the rain clouds were still hanging around and occasionally leaking on the track, but by the time the gate opened at 2 p.m. the sun was shinning and at the scheduled 4 p.m. start time for the second qualifier the track was smooth and tacky and the sun was shining.

Troy Ray in his replica Logghe-chassied alt made his best ever eighth-mile lap with a 4.453 at 138.85 mph. He would later bang the guardrail in true AA/FC fashion in the first round.

White improved to a 4.062/179.82 to retain the pole. Young then made what may have been the first sub-4-second, 200-mph lap of the event. He went straight down the right lane but didn’t record a speed or ET as the vibration of the nitro cars in the lights caused one of the sensors or reflectors at the finish line to malfunction. Young said that when they looked at their data logger after the run the numbers indicated they had run a 3.99/200 but without the numbers on the board it just didn’t officially happen.
