Qualifying Round One

Cory Lee

This was indicative in the performances in round one of qualifying on Friday. Eight cars made that session with Cory Lee driving the Ron Swearingen-tuned “California Hustler” to number one spot at 5.92/245.85. (Into a 25-30 mile per hour head wind). Kris Krabill sat number two at 5.99/229.12, with Richard Townsend on the bump with an early shut off 7.35/127.22.

With the high winds things did get a bit wacky, as both Tim Boychuk and Don Hudson did some extracurricular agricultural racing, going off the end of the race track as their chutes did not deploy or were late to deploy. Hudson went nearly 900 feet off the end, doing some significant damage to the front end of his Trans Am. However, the team was able to put the car back together well enough to come back for Q2.

Boychuk relied on his abilities as a sprint car driver in a former life to spin his car out and get it headed back to the end of the track, causing no damage, just getting the “Happy Hour” Camaro really dusty.
