Mostowich wins Outlaw Pro Gas at Fontana

Ken Mostowich made the long trip from Calgary, AB, Canada, to compete in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event and the season-opening Marcum Brothers Outlaw Pro Gas event, sponsored by Champion Cooling Systems held at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA, prior to the NHRA divisional race on May 18. Although Mostowich’s hopes fell short during the divisional race, he made the most of the Outlaw race, taking home the $2,000 winner’s purse when he beat Steve Parsons in the final round.

 

Mostowich let the SoCal hopefuls know they had their hands full with the only Canadian in the field, as he qualified number one with a near-perfect 8.901 with his Chevy Camaro. In all, four drivers qualified on the 8.90 index.

 

Steve Parsons and John Ross had a great race in the semifinals, with Parsons taking the win in a battle of ’63 Corvette roadsters, 8.900 to a losing 8.904. Parsons’ reaction time was a .010 to Ross’ .025. Mostowich got a bye into the final. Mostowich produced an 8.900 with a .010 light in the final to stop the Ridgecrest, CA-based Parsons, who finished second with a .005 too quick 8.895, after cutting a .023 light.

Outlaw Pro Gas racing continues at Auto Club Dragway on July 15 and August 18, and a top ten race for the championship will be held at Las Vegas on Oct. 31.   [05/22/18]

Westerfield takes a turn in Worsham’s nitro FC

Shane Westerfield had some time in the seat of Del Worsham’s nitro Funny Car at Topeka. Westerfield and Todd Simpson were the two drivers who did not make the 16-car field.

 

However, Westerfield also drove in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class, which he won. We’ll have a look at the sportsman racing tomorrow. (Ron Lewis photo)  [05/22/18]

Pro Mods and PSCA both on the bill for Gateway this weekend

The Premier Street Car Association and the Mid-West Pro Mod Series take over Gateway Motorsports Park just across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis for the return of Heads-Up Hootenanny this Friday and Saturday, May 25-26.

 

The Mid-West Pro Mods, featuring Radial vs. The World standout Keith Haney, is racing for a $10,000 purse with the following PSCA classes competing this weekend: Radial vs. The World, LDR, X275, 235/8.5, 6.0 Index, 7.0 Index, and Jr. Dragsters (6-12 and 13-18). Also on the card is Gateway’s Ford Fun and Mustang Madness car show and drags.  [05/22/18]

Two added to NHRA executive staff

NHRA has announced additions and promotions to its leadership team.

 

In racing operations, Ned Walliser rejoins NHRA, now as vice president of competition. Walliser previously worked with NHRA from 1994-2000, first as Pacific division director and then as director of racing operations. Walliser returns to NHRA from his role as chief operating officer for MainGate, Inc. and serving on the board of SFI Foundation, Inc. He began his career in racing event operations, including working in a broad operations capacity for Pace Entertainment (now Feld Entertainment Motorsports).

Jeffrey Young is joining NHRA as vice president of marketing and communications. Young joins NHRA from the Professional Bull Riders Association, where he spent eight years, most recently as regional vice president since 2015. Young will oversee all NHRA marketing initiatives. At PBR, Young was responsible for executing and evaluating all aspects of live event marketing and revenue including the PBR World Finals.

 

Additionally, Kristen Wentzell has been promoted to vice president of national event marketing and Evan Jonat has been promoted to vice president of live event marketing.   [05/22/18]
