PSCA Pro Mod winner Daniel Pharris
Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, IL, presented the annual Street Car Super Nationals on August 2-4, featuring the Mid-West Pro Mod Association (MWPMS), Premier Street Car Association (PSCA), JEGS Super Quick Series, Nostalgia Drag Racing League (NDRL) and Victory Nostalgia Super Stocks.
With eliminations starting late Saturday evening, the event concluded Sunday morning at 2:50 a.m.
PSCA
On a night made for racing, Sikeston, MO’s Daniel Pharris edged Shane Stack at the line for the victory in the VP Racing Fuels LDR class at Anarchy at the Arch V. The fifth year of the Premier Street Car Series’ brand of small-tire racing at Gateway Motorsports Park saw incredible racing all weekend, including Pharris’ 4.137-second ET at 185.38 mph against Stack’s 4.191 at 181.06 mph.
In the Morrow Bros. Ford Radial Vs. The World class, Marty Stinnett (shown) raced door-to-door with Jeff Naiser to the stripe, earning the big check with a 3.748-second pass at 201.16 mph over Naiser’s 3.780 at 194.66 mph.
The Slammers Second-Chance race consisted of drivers not making the field and drivers going out in E1 (a field that could have included NHRA/PDRA Pro Mod champion “Tricky” Rickie Smith, who went out in the first round after red lighting; Smith opted not to run the car in the second-chance race).
MWPMS
Sharing the bill with PSCA this weekend was the Mid-West Pro Mod Series, bringing a series record 37 cars to Gateway for three days of some of the best Pro Mod racing in the country. In a battle of Missourians, Nixa’s Kevin Maddux beat Raymore’s Jim Sakuvich—3.729 at 197.91 mph to 3.792 at 199.58 mph.
Jason Hamstra ’69 Camaro ran 3.703 seconds at 206.23 mph in the eighth mile to earn No. 1 Qualifier status and set the MWPMS ET record.
Kevin Maddux
Maddux steered his Ridewell Suspensions ’63 Corvette -- the lone car in the event sporting a roots-type supercharger—to quicker passes in each round of eliminations. He opened with a 3.78 at 195.62 to get by number-five starter Chad Javers, then posted 3.75 at 195.48 in a solo pass after Randy Merrick’s ’79 Corvette failed to start. In the semis, Maddux took on Hamstra, going 3.74 at 192.82 for the win and earning lane choice by a hundredth over Jim Sackuvich for the final.
Sackuvich, who qualified his nitrous-boosted 2014 Camaro seventh, defeated last year’s PDRA Pro Extreme World Champion Mike Recchia in round one, then downed Pesz before eliminating Jon Stouffer from the semis. Maddux dominated the final, though, posting a solid .025 holeshot, then leading the full stretch with a career-best 3.729 seconds at 197.91 mph over 3.792 at 199.58 for Sackuvich.
As the nephew of noted St. Louis-area chassis builder Jerry Haas, Maddux grew up around drag racing and often visited the Gateway facility, serving as a crew member in all classes from bracket-racing doorslammers to NHRA nitro burners; however, his MWPMS win came in his first race as a driver within sight of the world-famous St. Louis arch.
“Ever since I was a little boy I’ve wanted to race there,” Maddux revealed. “When my crew chief, Cody Barklage, was still driving I was a mechanic on his car and now he’s calling the shots for me and doing a great job of it, too. I mean, we won together the first time I raced in St. Louis, so it’s like I told my wife; it makes it memorable.”
The 20 cars that did not qualify for the 16-car field were eligible to buy-back for the Slammers Second-Chance Race. Jim Bell of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, drove his ’69 Camaro to the win over a troubled run by the ’67 Mustang of Chad Javes of Tea, SD, in the final round.
