The United Nitro Funny Cars Association completed their Northwest Double Header at Kent, Washington‘s Pacific Raceways when Bobby Cottrell, driving the Austin & O’Brien “Northwest Hitter” Camaro swept both events, including Spokane County Raceway’s Nitro Spring Nationals with close drag racing and tight final round matches.

At the second race in seven days, reigning Good Vibrations UNFC Champion Cottrell narrowly defeated Matt Bynam in the newly finished “Nitro Nick” Camaro (5.775 to Bynam’s 5.789) in Round 1. He defeated Steven Densham in the second round then, in another close battle, raced Ryan Hodgson’s “Pacemaker” Camaro running 5.751 ET to the Canadian’s 5.771 ET at solid 250.37 MPH.

For the second UNFC event in a row, 2018 Legends of Nitro Rookie of the Year Billy Morris set the event’s Low Elapsed Time standard, running a career best 5.592 in Eddie Knox’s “Problem Child” Camaro. Morris was runner-up at the Spokane event, losing to Cottrell.  (Darr Hawthorne photos)

Cottrell, with his second win in the 2019 Good Vibrations UNFC Championship Series said, “All the competition is getting tougher and tighter, every round is a fight to the stripe. I can’t wait to get back in that car!”

Many of the best footbrake racers in the country celebrated the July 4th weekend at Bristol (TN) Dragway taking part in the 13th annual BTE World Footbrake Challenge.

DAY 1, Thursday, July 4: The Thursday Gamblers Race set a WFC record with 234 cars (no buybacks) taking part. Jerry Hunt and Jimmy Reeves met in the final, but it was all over quickly when Hunt went red.

DAY 2: Because of the record number of entries (478), co-promotors Jared Pennington and Steve Stites were forced to make the executive decision to not run the Friday Gamblers race and concentrate on the Friday $10,000-to-win race. Twelve hours after eliminations began, past WFC winner Josh Epperson took the win over NMCA champ Chad Brewer.

DAY 3: The entry record was reset at 484 for Saturday, but with a 1 a.m. curfew, there were still 22 racers left to finish running for the $10,000 on Sunday.

DAY 4: Thursday’s winner, Jimmy Reeves, won the delayed Saturday race over Edmond Ellison. In Sunday’s final, Terry Neiman’s dead-on the dial with a 3 forced David Bell to break out. The 68-year-old Neiman has been driving the same car since 1970.  (photos courtesy WFC)   [07/10/19]
