PDRA adds Outlaw 632 Shootout to Northern Nationals

Racers in the Professional Drag Racers Association’s Schwing America Pro Outlaw 632 class will have the chance to race for big money without the pressure of a points race at the upcoming PDRA Northern Nationals presented by Callies Performance, July 18-20 at Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio. The Pro Outlaw 632 Shootout presented by $hameless Racing will pay $7,500 to the winner, marking the largest purse in class history.

“The Pro Outlaw 632 class has really taken off over the last few years,” said Tyler Crossnoe, PDRA race director. “The Northern Nationals wasn’t originally on the schedule for the class, so it was a big deal for everyone involved when Wes Distefano and $hameless Racing came on board to put together this big-money shootout to run during our northernmost event.”

Distefano (shown), who joined the PDRA tour this season with his Musi-powered ’68 Camaro, is second in Pro Outlaw 632 points after runner-up finishes at the East Coast Nationals and the North-South Shootout. He previously raced in Outlaw 632 at his home track, Milan Dragway, near Detroit.

Jr. Dragster Eastern Finals set for Bristol

NHRA’s Jr. Drag Racing Eastern Conference Finals presented by Huddleston Performance will take place at Thunder Valley Bristol Dragway Thursday through Saturday, July 18-20. The week-long action kicks off with a Huddleston Performance Jr. Dragster event on Saturday, July 13. A 330-foot race, Jr. shootouts, and fun races will fill the subsequent days leading up to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The event will feature more than 500 drivers, from 6-17 years old, in eight racing categories competing for individual and team honors. Each of the ten members of the Team Champions at the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing Eastern Conference Finals event will receive the NHRA Wally trophy. Individual champions will each earn $1,500 along with a Wally trophy and champions jacket.

Oksas returns Pro Mod to ‘Thunder Mountain’

When Scott Oksas returns to Bandimere Speedway on Aug. 9-10 for the third annual World Series of Pro Mod, he hopes to be the third straight dark horse candidate to win the event. Mike Bowman won the first event and Carl Stevens Jr. was last season’s champ.

Oksas, a Los Angeles-area native, wants to continue that trend in his ’67 Shelby Ford Mustang on Thunder Mountain. He’s bringing three engines and he’ll be in Denver on the Monday of the race to start testing the next day.

Oksas has brought in tuner Jeff Pierce to join a team that already includes Roger Rompal and Keith Howard.

“I wasn’t the fastest guy last year, but with Jeff now tuning the car, it’s a totally different animal,” Oksas said. “I feel like we’ve got a car capable of running in the 5.80s and 5.90s, and I think we’ll do that on the mountain, without a doubt. A bunch of guys are going to be capable of that, so it’s going to come down to who’s the calmest and the coolest under the pressure, and who’s going to cut a light. Hopefully I’m the one going .000 on the tree and 5.87 with $100,000 on the line.”

Off the Track: 200-mph armor-plated vehicle

When we say “bullet-proof” we really mean it for this vehicle. AddArmor has turned an Audi RS7 into an armor-paneled car that reaches speed of more than 200 mph and goes zero to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds.

It may not be good on the racetrack, but if your opponent ever gets too aggressive -- it’s your vehicle. The polycarbonate composite paneling weighs no more than 200 lbs., much less than steel plating, and can stop up to a .44 Magnum round. The car is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine.
