Burks announce retirement from DRO

Jeff and Kay Burk, founders of DragRacingOnline.com, have announced that they will be retiring from the magazine early this year. Unless it is sold, the magazine will close and cease putting up new material after March 7, 2020. (Jeff Burk's 75th birthday.)

 

The couple has spent over 43 years in the racing business editing and producing magazines beginning with their own Midwest Racer in 1976, writing and photography for other magazines, and PR for race teams. They began DRO as an internet magazine in September 1999.

 

The company’s stable of magazines is for sale and there are several parties who have expressed interest in buying the company. If the company is not sold the magazine will not disappear. The Burks will move the magazine and its archives to a server so that they will remain available to the public.   [01/15/20]

Line to retire from driving after this season

Three-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Jason Line has announced his retirement and dubbed his final season of driving for Ken Black Racing, "the Finish Line Tour."

 

Line will concentrate on building and tuning Pro Stock and Sportsman-class race engines at the Ken Black Racing shop in Mooresville, NC. He began driving for KB Racing in 2003.

No fans allowed by pros at pre-season testing

The Agent can't help but wonder why NHRA's pro racers don't want any fans at their pre-season test sessions. The pro doorslammers have a test session in Florida and the nitro burners will test at Las Vegas and Phoenix and in all cases spectators are not permitted.

 

With almost no news coming from the NHRA since the World Finals in Pomona at the end if 2019 you would think that the teams would like to generate a little excitement for their fans and ' sponsors for the new season?   [01/15/20]

‘Big Show’ Funny Cars joining the Chaos

The Funny Car Chaos series and its fans will be seeing more "Big Show" style nitro funny cars for the 2020 season. In 2019 there were often at least a couple of NHRA legal Nitro Funny cars competing. This year there are enough teams with NHRA-style dual mag, 500 ci powered cars who have committed to the Chaos series that fans could see as many as four at the season opener.   [01/15/20]

John Force COPO Camaro to be auctioned

The 2020 Chevrolet COPO Camaro John Force edition will be on the auction block Friday, Jan. 17, at approximately 8:30 p.m. EST.

 

Chevrolet will auction the 2020 COPO Camaro John Force edition at the 49th Barrett Jackson Scottsdale Auction this weekend. Proceeds from the sale will benefit DonorsChoose.org, whose mission is to help classrooms in need so students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education.

 

The John Force COPO is distinctly styled, with a black-and-silver paint scheme and signature exterior graphics, including a ghosted American flag on the hood. The interior has also been inspired by the 16-time National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car champion. The racetrack-ready car also features a unique “2020COPO-FORCE” identification plaque.

 

Power for the John Force COPO Camaro is provided by a revised version of Chevrolet Performance’s supercharged, LSX-based 350 engine, featuring a 2.65L Magnuson supercharger and all-new LSX-SC cylinder heads. A Racer’s package, which includes a carbon-fiber air inlet, dual batteries, weight box, parachute and quick-change coupling for the engine, is also included.

 

“I enjoyed helping design this car,” said Force, who will give a custom helmet and fire suit to the winning bidder. “The car is stylish. Of course, under the hood it’s unbelievable. The COPO Camaro is already a formidable race car. But this one is even more special, as it will help support a cause I firmly believe in.”   [01/15/20]

JEGS to sponsor SFG Drag Racing Series

JEGS has entered an agreement to become the title sponsor of Kyle Riley's wildly successful SFG series of high-dollar bracket races. The sponsorship gives JEGS.com title rights to three of the four scheduled races in 2020 and presenting sponsorship rights to the fourth event.

 

The 2020 JEGS.com SFG Series schedule begins with the JEGS SFG 500, April 21-26, at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Adel, Ga., followed by the FTI SFG 350 presented by JEGS, May 28-30, at Cedar Falls Motorsports Park in Iowa; the JEGS SFG $1.1 Million, June 29-July 5, at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich.; and the JEGS SFG Superbowl of Bracket Racing, Sept. 16-20, at Darlington Dragway in South Carolina.  [01/15/20]

So Cal Associations begin season at Fontana

The Southern California NHRA “Super Class” associations will begin their 2020 drag racing seasons this weekend, Jan. 18-19, at Auto Club Dragway at the Fontana, Calif., racing facility. Racing will feature the K&N 890 Series presented by Blaster, the Southern California Pro Gas Assoc., and the SoCal Super Street Assoc.

 

Ryan Diosdado is expected to defend his series championship in the K&N 890 series, after winning his fifth Pro Gas series championship, Pete Bothe (shown) will be looking for more success in the 9.90 class as the Pro Gas series opens its 42nd annual series.  Kevin Houmard won his first SoCal Super Street championship in 2019, and he looks to repeat that accomplishment this year with his blown-’70 Chevy Camaro.  (Bob Johnson photo)   [01/15/20]
