HEAVY STREET

Eighteen cars showed up for the 16 spots in Heavy Street and Jeff Lutz, after qualifying No. 1 with a 7.07/207.37 met up with No. 2 qualifier Mike Schmidt in the final with Schmidt getting the victory with an easy 8.46 at 176 as Lutz broke on the line, giving him two runner-up finishes for the day.

The most impressive class to this reporter was Drag Radial.  How could you not like a class that has an almost 84-year-old well driller from Kentucky running a 7.276 at (are you ready for this?) an unbelievable 221.96 mph in his twin turbo Mustang to qualify No. 1?  Or how about a wheelstanding ’65 Nova station wagon that cranks out an 8.11 at 177?

J.W. Kinzer

Fourteen cars showed up to do battle in Drag Radial and the No.1 and 2 qualifiers met in the final.  Eighty-three year-old J. W. Kinzer took the top spot with a 7.27 at 221 and backed up that number with a 7.22 at 220 during eliminations with his twin turbo Mustang. He was the odds-on bet to win but broke in the final giving the No. 2 guy, Mike Fratena, who qualified with a 7.61 at 190.08, a easy win.

The big question is will there be a 20th Annual World Street Nationals?  Time will tell.  Hopefully the economy will improve and the WSN will return to the glory it once had.
