Veteran Top Fuel racer Henry Walther was working on Mike Fuller’s “Forever Young” at the test session and also commented on the new M&H tire.

“One of the problems we (in Top Fuel) have been having was (finding a way) to reduce some of the load on the engine at the hit of the throttle off the starting line. The tire we had been running had gotten ahead of the horsepower we’re making in today’s Top Fuel motor.  Off the line we needed to get up on top of the tire and that was where much of our engine damage was occurring.  The tire getting ahead of the motor made it even worse.  (Using) the two-speed (trans) in combination with the new tire seems to have taken care of that problem quite handily; seven runs this weekend has given us options we didn’t have before, given us more tools in our tuning arsenal.”

Walther went on to explain, “Back in the seventies, we went through the same issues coming out of the direct drive to the two-speed trans in the Big Show and as also happened with the transition away from the two-speed to direct drive as we now have in the Big Show.”
