PSCA Calvert Racing Summer Nationals at Fontana, Calif.

The weather may have run hot and cold, but the racing in the Pacific Street Car Association’s Calvert Racing Summer Nationals at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., was hot and close on June 6-8. Under overcast skies with lower than normal temperatures, qualifying started out Saturday morning on a track that was very different than it would be late in the day and on race day. The track was noticeably off on Saturday, but the track crew worked hard late into the night to deliver a good racing surface for Sunday.

PSCA classes run the gamut from street legal cars to wild 4-second eighth-mile Outlaw cars. The fans saw a bit of everything and the racers worked hard to find their setup. The turnout was good and everyone from the youngest juniors to the oldest racer got lots of runs with the three-day PSCA format.

The Junior Dragster 8-12 year old class saw Paige Schweers of Yorba Linda, Calif., take the win when Chris Lostriech of Upland, Calif., broke out with an 11.478 on his 11.50 dial-in while Paige ran a clean 12.235 on an 11.22 dial.

In the elder Junior class, 13 and up, Kevin Motter from Anaheim, Calif., got a big edge at the tree with a .038 light to Ashley Harvey of Wildomar, California’s .136 which let Mottor ease up to a 7.966 ET on a 7.90 dial-in vs. Harvey’s 8.946 on an 8.89 dial.

In the title sponsor’s Calvert Racing Street Muscle class, Las Vegas resident George Mattie got the holeshot win by virtue of a .023 light to runner-up Rob Strong’s .066 light. Mattie ran a 10.614 on an 11.55 dial-in, which was enough to beat Strong’s 10.724 on a 10.72 dial.
