The race sponsor is Calvert Racing Suspension and the father-son team of John and Brent from Lancaster, Calif., made it to the finals of the Accufab Mustang Madness class but weren’t able to beat Simi Valley, Calif., resident Pat Schulds. Calvert had the margin on the starting line with a .089 light to Schulds’ .158, but Schulds’ 9.986 on a 9.80 dial did the trick compared to Calvert’s 9.184 on an 8.87 dial.

Keith Winters of Las Vegas, fresh off his win the week before in the NHRA Division 7 National Open race at the same track in Fontana, proved he really has his dragster in the zone right now. The Bracket 1 race wasn’t decided on the tree, with Winter’s great .006 light actually putting him behind Brad Pierce’s nearly perfect .001 light. Pierce, of Riverside, Calif., ran a 9.899 on his 9.85 dial which wasn’t enough to beat Winter’s 7.681 on a 7.67 dial-in.

One of the racers’ favorite classes, Goodyear Racing’s Open Comp, saw new points leader Don McDavit of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., drive his ’64 Chevelle to the win over Jennifer Wilson’s 1980 Dodge Charger. Although Wilson got the light with a .069 to a .103 over McDavit, her 10.851 on a 10.52 dial-in was no match for McDavit’s 9.640 on a 9.59 dial.

Ross Racing Piston’s Triple Index saw eight-time PSCA champion Mike “The Machine” Nordahl in his gorgeous and meticulous maroon ’64 Nova take the trophy and the cash over Quartz Hill, Calif., driver John Kindred’s ’74 Vega. In a heads up 10.60 index final, Nordahl cut a .008 light to Kindred’s .028 and then ran a 10.629 on his 10.60 dial-in to Kindred’s 10.630.
