One of the very cool things that the fans have the ability to do is tailgate at the track. There are bleachers on both sides of the track but there is another way of seeing the action at Renegade.

As Snelson puts it, “It’s like going to the drive-in theater. We let people bring in their coolers and they back their trucks or vans up to the fence and set up their lawn chairs and watch the races.”

It’s a very nostalgic way of going to the races, and the fans respond by filling the place.

Snelson’s energy is felt throughout the facility, and his creativity was on display June 27-28 as Renegade Raceway played host to a very throwback concept: Pro Comp Racing under the lights.

That is right, Pro Comp racing, the beginnings of what is now known as Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars.

A group from the Northwest has banded together to race floppers versus dragsters (both front and rear motored) versus altereds. No index and first to the finish line wins. Renegades, to say the least!

The Pro Comp group runs their show as a Chicago-style event with all cars running two rounds and the quickest two coming back for the final. This series has teams coming from Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, British Columbia, Canada, and, of course, Washington.

At this event, the cars would run to the eighth mile due to some gusty high winds.

After the first round Washington’s “Lady” Elaine Sellers in her beautiful Nova Funny Car was quickest at 4.31 seconds. Sellers has been on a roll as of late, running great times and winning the Fox Hunt at Firebird Raceway the weekend before.
