Tim Ortiz was next with his Pontiac and ran a cautious 5.10 @ 90.20 with his rebuilt power plant as the small block motivated Firebird of Dennis Hendrix ran a 4.55 @ 144.65. The next pair had a couple of heavy hitters. Doug Morales, in his ‘68 Camaro, had traction wows and mustered only a 4.55 @ 163.69 as he overpowered the track. In the other lane, defending series champion Chris Domino started the night the right way, setting the pace with a smooth 4.22 @ 172.48.

The final car to take a shot was Shane Thompson who also had issues getting hold of the sticky racing surface and posted a 6.15 @ 91.63. After the first session, the common refrain was that the window for the set-ups was narrow but there. Too much or too little horsepower and tire shake was waiting for you.
