Qualifying

Friday's first round of qualifying was washed out by a huge storm system that came through and dumped a great deal of much needed moisture into the Southwestern Idaho area, but it didn't do a darn thing for racing.

Saturday dawned overcast but mild. Two rounds of sportsman qualifying took place before the second session of Nostalgia Funny Car qualifying.

Tim Boychuk

All ten teams took a shot at the racetrack. The first pair out was Tim Boychuk at the wheel of Twig Ziegler's "Pizza Heaven" Satellite.  With Ziegler taking over tuning duties for departed crew chief Roland Leong it appears as though Ziegler will be using the two-car team to do R&D for each other. According to Ziegler, "Both cars are set up identical now and we will work off of each other to make them both better." In essence, Boychuk will have an east coast team and a west coast team, taking their program and maybe the class to a new level.

It appears as though their plan worked as Boychuk ran a very nice 5.87 shutting off early to only 229.15 mph, which was good for the number one position.

Another surprise was Robert Townsend who slipped into the number-two position at 5.92 and 242.67 mph.

Robert Overholser in Don Nelson's "California Hustler" was right behind at 5.93/244.63.
