Pro Stocks will hold burnout contest at U.S. Nationals

After the positive fan reaction from Shane Gray’s burnouts in Brainerd, the NHRA and Goodyear will add the “Pro Stock Battle of the Burnouts: Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em” to the qualifying at this week’s U.S. Nationals.

 

During each qualifying round announcers Alan Reinhart, Brian Lohnes and Joe Costello will select the top two burnouts. The fans will see the two burnouts replayed on the Sunoco Vision screen and their applause will determine the winner.

 

The winner of each round will receive a set of Goodyear racing slicks and will get 200 points toward the Grand Prize. The runner up of each round will receive 100 points. After the final round of Pro Stock qualifying, all points will be tabulated and the driver with the most points will receive the Grand Prize of $5,000.  [08/30/17]

Morgan and Stevens return to driving at Indy

Longtime racer Larry Morgan, recently named as president of the ADRL, will make his return to the Pro Stock class at the U.S. Nationals. He will be driving a Jerry Hass Camaro prepared by Modern Racing and powered by an engine from Chris McGaha’s shop in Odessa, TX.

 

“Larry hasn’t raced Pro Stock since the class switched to electronic fuel injections, so we had to completely rewire and prepare the car for EFI,” said Modern Racing’s Justin Elkes.

 

Elkes will continue his tuning duties for 2016 U.S. Nationals Pro Stock winner, Chris McGaha, as well as continuing to work with Frank Manzo on Mike Castellana’s supercharged Al-Anabi Performance Pro Mod Camaro. He also consults on Deric Kramer’s Pro Stock Dart, which will be running at Indy.

 

Oh, yeah, there’s one more team to take care of.

Fredlund sets FIM-E Pro Stock Bike speed record at NitrOlympx

At the NitrOlympx in Hockenheimring, Germany, the stocker motorcycles had seventeen entries trying to make the cut, with sixteen gaining a time slip and thus into a four-round eliminator for the first time this season.

 

Åland’s Fredrik Fredlund made the best of the conditions, leading qualifying by two tenths with a 7.090/189.71, taking the class speed record with a 7.078/191.45 mph ticket in the opening round of eliminations, setting class low ET with a 7.059 in the quarters, resetting the speed record with a 7.097/191.53 in the semi-finals, before defeating a resurgent Alex Hope with a 7.105 to the Brit’s 7.406 (getting to the final after a couple of days of woes was good enough).

Lombardo and other drivers support ‘A Day at the Races’ program

For the third consecutive year, driver John Lombardo Jr., car owner Rick Jackson, and the entire NAPA Filters/Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Funny Car team will raise funds for Hoosier Burn Camp and the Racers for Christ Kids Program with an online auction (HERE) and by accepting donations.

 

On Saturday, Sept. 2, they provide “A Day at the Races,” a program bringing children from Hoosier Burn Camp to the track for a fun-filled day at no expense to their families.

 

Other races from the Mello Yello and Lucas Oil ranks participate in “A Day at the Races” to give the children an experience they won’t soon forget. Drivers slated to join Lombardo in interacting with the special guests, signing autographs, and playing games are Jack Beckman, Angelle Sampey, Cory Reed, Allen Johnson, Megan Meyer, Ashley Sanford, John Force Racing drivers, and many more. This weekend will see a double race weekend for the IHRA’s Summit Sportsman National Championship at Carolina Dragway in Aiken, SC.

 

The SSNC point leaders are: Marlon Goates (Top Sportsman), Johnny Tolisano (Top Dragster), Peter D’Agnolo (Super Stock), Myron Patek (Stock), Danny Waters Jr. (Quick Rod), Steve Furr (Super Rod), Christopher Webb (Hot Rod), and Paige Montgomery (Jr. Dragster).

Mahle appoints Lundh as East Regional Manager

MAHLE Aftermarket Inc. has recently appointed Matthew Lundh as East Regional Manager. He will report to Jim Kahut, Head of Aftermarket Sales North America.

 

Most recently Lundh served as business development manager at TRW Automotive Aftermarket, North America, and prior to that he was director of sales for AutoMD.  [08/30/17]

Automotive aftermarket rallies for Houston

The Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF) is making preparations to aid aftermarket families affected by Hurricane Harvey.

 

“It is very early in the process, but our intention is to explore every avenue to identify aftermarket families that need our help during this unprecedented natural disaster,” said Bob Hirsch, AACF president.

 

“Although AACF doesn’t claim to be a disaster relief service, we will do our best to identify and assist those industry families that have immediate and unmet needs in keeping with our mission to support aftermarket families facing catastrophic circumstances,” said Joel Ayres, executive director of AACF.

 

AACF is asking for tax-deductible donations to help provide urgently needed funding. Donations can be made online, by mail at P.O. Box 865420, Orlando, FL 32886, or by calling 772-286-5500.

 

“Clearly, we don’t know what shape our response is going to take yet,” Ayres continued. “What we do know is we’re going to need the generous support of our industry if we want to be in a position to respond. Changes made to 2018 JEGS Allstar points accumulation

The move of the Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by K&N to early June on the 2018 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Schedule has also shifted the yearlong JEGS Allstar points battle for the 2018 event. Due to this, NHRA announced today that both the NHRA West Central Division and the Northwest Division will finalize their divisional teams for the 2018 JEGS Allstar competition with their final event in the 2017 racing season.

 

The West Central divisional event at Tri-State Raceway, Earlville, Iowa, Sept. 8-10 and the Northwest divisional event at Woodburn Dragstrip, Sept. 15-17 will be the last event for racers in those divisions to earn points, and a spot in the 2018 JEGS Allstar event to be held at Route 66 Raceway on June 2, 2018.

 

As announced early this year and beginning with the 2018 JEGS Allstar event, racers will now count their best five in-division events toward their JEGS Allstar point’s total.

 

The 2018 JEGS Allstar points began at the following events:

The 2017 JEGS Allstar event saw the team from the North Central Division earn their eighth team championship while the West Region grabbed their third Top Alcohol Regional Team Championship.  [08/30/17]

The Professional Drag Racers Association has announced the race schedule for 2018.

 

There will again be eight events with National Trail Raceway being a new stop on the eighth-mile organization’s calendar.

Bray’s Solara makes Willowbank debut

Ben Bray’s TBR Gulf Western Oils Toyota Solara made its debut at the 27th Brisbane Jamboree at Willowbank Raceway.

 

The debut did not go the way the team has planned, however. The team had pulled a lot of all-nighters just to get to the event and new-car issues caused the car to be unable to make a Saturday qualifying run.

 

Event organizer, Collin Willshire, loaned the team a converter, and after another all-nighter, the team was able to make a run on Sunday. Bray took the car to a shakedown run half pass, and had to do so again on the second run.

 

“After thrashing away for the whole weekend and putting those couple of test hits on it, it is really sounding awesome and I can’t wait to see what it delivers once we get on top of the new set-up,” Bray said.

Courtney, McMillen make final spots in Traxxas shootouts

Advance Auto Parts driver Courtney Force will defend her Traxxas Nitro Shootout title, as she won the lottery-style drawing on Wednesday at an NHRA press conference to earn the final spot in the special race. She was received the top number of fan votes. Force will be the No. 8 seed in the Shootout and will race No. 1 seed Ron Capps in the first round on Sunday.

 

The other first-round match ups are Robert Hight vs. J.R. Todd, Matt Hagan vs. John Force, and Tommy Johnson Jr. vs. Jack Beckman.

 

Terry McMillen, who also won last year’s fan vote in the NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout, defeated Scott Palmer in this year’s fan vote lottery. McMillen earned the most fan votes with 55 percent. He will meet top seed Antron Brown in the first round of the NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Top Fuel on Saturday.

 

In other first-round action, Steve Torrence will face Clay Millican, Leah Prtichett will go against Doug Kalitta, and Tony Schumacher will face Brittany Force.  [08/30/17]
