This weekend sees the conclusion of the FIA / FIM-E European Drag Racing season at the Euro Finals at Santa Pod Raceway, England, with titles up for grabs in all eight car and bike classes.

Charlotte Motor Speedway to open campgrounds to Irma evacuees

In conjunction with preparations for the Sept. 15-17 NHRA Carolina Nationals, Charlotte Motor Speedway will open its Rock City Campground beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, for evacuees heading north or inland from Hurricane Irma.

 

With severe weather in the forecast for other southeastern states, accommodations will be available as long as possible prior to potential landfall. Evacuees should access Rock City Campground off Bruton Smith Boulevard through Entrance Z and will have access to bathhouse facilities on speedway property.

 

“We are happy to open our doors to help those needing a place to seek shelter during this difficult time,” said Greg Walter, the executive vice president of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “We look forward to show them the hospitality for which we’re known and they deserve. We are fortunate to have camping available to accommodate both hurricane evacuees and the drag racing fans who will join us next week.”

 

Evacuees are asked to check in at the ticket office on the second floor of Smith Tower at the speedway’s main entrance, starting as early as Friday morning. After-hour arrivals will be handled by Charlotte Motor Speedway security.

 

In addition, Atlanta Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway are also offering free camping spaces to evacuees fleeing the storm.  [09/08/17]

Dixon will bring street car to Cordova’s Drag Week stop

Three-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion Larry Dixon will be taking a classic approach in his return to Cordova International Raceway for Hot Rod Drag Week on Sept. 10, 11, and 15.

 

Dixon, who recently brought his nitro dragster to CIR for the 64th Annual World Series of Drag Racing, presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts, will be bringing his classic 1966 Chevrolet Nova to the famed Cordova drag strip for Hot Rod Drag Week.

 

This will be Dixon's second time participating in this unique event, where street/strip cars are driven 1,000-plus miles on public roads during a trip that includes four drag strips and five races in five days.

 

"It's like an Iron Man Triathlon for racers," said Dixon. "I finished it last year and had a great time. I'm looking forward to getting out there and being a part of this year's races."

 

The 13th annual Hot Rod Drag Week starts with a test-and-tune at Cordova International Raceway on Sept. 10. The first race takes place at CIR on Sept. 11 and then moves to Byron Dragway, Byron, IL, on Sept. 13 followed by Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI, on Sept. 14 and then returns to Cordova for the final race on Friday, Sept. 15. Gateway to host Roadkill Zip-Tie Drags for first time

Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, IL, right across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis, will host the Roadkill Zip-Tie Drags on Sept. 15-16.

 

Auto enthusiasts will develop their drag racing skills, view cars of all kinds and share stories with David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan, hosts of Roadkill (@RoadkillShow), the world’s most-viewed YouTube automotive original series.

 

Roadkill is a brand based on “automotive chaos theory” that was launched digitally on YouTube and has received more than 250 million video views to date. Today, Roadkill has expanded beyond digital video into print and events, drawing more than 50,000 spectators and participants to Roadkill Nights.

Wolf sets torque converter record at U.S. Nationals

Kirk Wolf and the Booher Racing Top Alcohol Dragster team turned a slow start into a record-breaking weekend at the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway. Wolf drove the AB Construction supercharged dragster to a 5.300-second pass in qualifying and a 5.256 in the first round of eliminations to reset the world record for the quickest torque converter-equipped race car.  The dragster is tuned by former driver Brandon Booher. Flansaas Wins First Blown Alcohol Thunder Event while Jones Clinches Championship

Kelly Flansaas (shown) broke through to win his first ever DragParts.com Blown Alcohol Thunder event. Flansaas won the Blown Alcohol Thunder Finals at the new Sage Raceway in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Larry DeMott was the runner up in the “Underdog” blown alcohol dragster.

 

Flansaas, who drives the “Rocky Mountain Thunder” Corvette Funny Car, had a winning eighth mile time of 4.50 at the high elevation track. He also earned the TCS Low ET of the event and the Good Vibrations Best Reaction Time.

 

Brent Jones clinched the 2017 DragParts.com Blown Alcohol Thunder Championship followed by Flansaas, Alvan Behar, Dane Lachelt and Rich Bailey rounds out the top five. Tedesco goes for $50K at bracket race

Reigning NHRA Super Gas world champion Mia Tedesco will be one of the top racers vying for the various titles up for grabs at this weekend's ninth annual Moser Engineering Great American $50,000 Bracket Race at Memphis International Raceway.

 

Doubling her chances to win some of the big cash prizes up for grabs, Tedesco will be driving two of her CARS Vehicle Service Contracts bracket dragsters. Crew chief "Racin' Jason" Lynch also plans to race two CARS Vehicle Service Contracts racecars, one dragster and his reliable Olds Cutlass.

 

Beginning with the American Race Cars Shootout Thursday night, which awards a new dragster to the winner, Tedesco and Lynch can compete in as many as six different races throughout the weekend. Friday will feature the $10,000 Racing RVs race, a $10,000-to-win "King of Memphis" race and a $2,000 "Out of the Gate Race."

 

Saturday is the big $50,000-to-win main event, and Sunday will close with the Patterson Elite Performance $10,000-to-win finale.

 

"They're also doing an All-State Challenge and I'll be the female representative from Pennsylvania," Tedesco said. "There's racers from 36 different states participating and they have four or five categories. The racers from each state had to pick one female and I was the one chosen

from Pennsylvania.”

 

After this weekend's festivities, Tedesco and Lynch will return to NHRA competition at the 10th annual NHRA Carolina Nationals, Sept. 15-17 at zMax Dragway in Charlotte. Tedesco also plans to race national events in Reading, St. Louis and Dallas.  [09/08/17]

Spectator ticket prices to rise for Maple Grove’s NHRA Dodge Nationals

Spectator admission ticket prices will be increasing the week of the 2017 Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway. Starting Monday, Sept. 18, tickets will be five dollars more leading up to the Nationals and at the gate. This does not mean fans cannot purchase tickets at the gate, it simply means it will cost a little more.

 

Anyone interested in attending the National event who has yet to purchase tickets, should do so prior to Monday, Sept. 18 at www.maplegroveraceway.com and click on the banner reading “Click Here for Race Tickets.”

Double the action at CHRR with finish of Boise race

The finals in Nostalgia Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Mod from the rained out Nightfire Nationals at Firebird Raceway will now be completed in Bakersfield during the 26th annual California Hot Rod Reunion on Oct. 20-22.

 

In Top Fuel Jim Murphy, the winner at the Holley National Hot Rod Reunion® presented by AAA Insurance in Bowling Green, KY, will face Adam Sorokin (shown); Funny Car will pit Jason Rupert against Ryan Hodgson; and in Pro Mod Mike Maggio will battle Ed Thornton Jr. for the victory. The final eliminations will be run on Saturday during the final qualifying session.

 

These racers will also be taking part in the California Hot Rod Reunion® where they will have a chance for a rare ‘double-up’ at the historic event. The added finals will also go a long way to solidify championship aspirations as the season concludes on Sunday.

 

During the weekend 12 categories will be contested including Top Fuel, Funny Car, AA/Fuel Altered, A/Fuel, Junior Fuel, 7.0 Pro, Nostalgia Eliminator, and A/Gas will all be competing under NHRA Heritage Series Rules during the final race of the 2017 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Drag Racing Series season. New speed record set for diesel trucks

The nonprofit organization Greenspeed Research broke the land-speed record for diesel trucks. The truck reached a speed of 219.411 mph at the 69th Annual Southern California Timing Association Speed Week in Utah. The previous diesel speed record stood for ten years at 215.091 mph.

 

Racing among 500 other entrants at the event, the GsR vehicle was a Chevy S-10 retrofitted with a high-powered diesel engine including many MAHLE performance products. The truck was driven by Dave Shenker.  (Greenspeed photo)  [09/08/17]
