Fontana hosts rescheduled SoCal Pro Gas/K&N 890 Series event

The Southern California Pro Gas Association and the K&N 890 Series presented by Blaster were scheduled to open their 2019 season in February, but rain forced the postponement until this weekend, Apr. 26-27, at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA.

Kevin McClelland (shown) will enter the Pro Gas doubleheader as the reigning series champion. Grand prize for this year’s championship is a trip to Maui sponsored by Harris Family Racing!

K&N 890 Series champ Greg Hicks of Las Vegas is expected to defend his title at the event, along with 30-plus Super Comp racers.

Delaware track renews with IHRA

US 13 Dragway in Delmar, DE, has renewed its IHRA sanction. The facility features a quarter-mile drag strip and a half-mile clay oval known as Delaware International Speedway.

The parents of current owner Charlie Cathell were the original owners of the drag strip, which opened in 1963. In 1965 they added the dirt track.

Scheduled for this Saturday, April 27, is the “Get Busy” Grudge Fest with the IHRA Summit SuperSeries on Sunday.

Gateway’s Heads-up Hootenanny features Super Chevy, Pro

Keith Haney will be one of the MWPMS racers at St. Louis competing on the eighth mile. He owns the series as well as Tulsa Raceway Park.

The newly christened World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway (formerly Gateway Motorsports Park) will present their annual Super Chevy Show on April 26-28.

Saturday will be the biggest day of the meet that has been combined with the annual Heads-up Hootenanny. The show will feature the Mid-West Pro Mod Series group (who have added Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes this year) along with heads-up and bracket racing. Drag radial cars will also be running and, of course, a Chevrolet car show. Veteran drag racing announcer Al Tucci will call the action and entertain the fans.

By the Numbers: Charlotte entries

The Agent notes that some of the categories at the Four-Wide Nationals this weekend at Charlotte are a bit light: Top Fuel (16), Funny Car (19), Pro Stock Motorcycle (19), Top Alcohol Dragster (15) and Top Alcohol Funny Car (10). However, there is a full complement of 26 entries in Pro Mod.

Prudhomme to compete in Mexican 1000 for second year

Last year Don “The Snake” Prudhomme got a long-delayed opportunity to compete in the grueling Mexican 1000 off-road race. This year, partnered with Jagger Jones, of Scottsdale, AZ, a rising young star in NASCAR’s K&N Series and the 16-year-old grandson of fellow racing legend Parnelli Jones, he’s headed back to Ensenada, starting point for one of the world’s greatest off-road challenges, determined to greatly improve his results.

Prudhomme and Jones will be sharing the driving duties behind the wheel of a JEGS High Performance Mail Order and Lucas Oil sponsored 2019 Polaris RZR 1000 prepped by P.J. Jones of PJ’s Performance in Scottsdale, AZ, and will race in the Stock Turbo UTV class.

Last year’s Mexican 1000 was the “Snake’s” first competitive driving appearance since 1994 when he retired from the NHRA tour having won 49 National Events in the Funny Car and Top Fuel divisions. Later, as team owner, he added another 63 NHRA tour victories.

Jones’ father, P.J., was actually the one that connected the two racers after Prudhomme expressed interest in running the race again but wasn’t sure about finding the right co-driver.

The Mexican 1000 is a five-day, off-road rally run by the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) as a celebration of off-road racing history and vintage off-road machinery. Cars, buggies, trucks, and motorcycles from all eras of Baja racing are eligible to participate in a variety of classes. The race begins Friday, April 26, in Ensenda, Baja, Mexico, and ends Thursday, May 2, in San Jose del Cabo, Baja, Mexico.
