The sportsman racers took to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but did not run Four-Wide as did the pros, making it much easier on the racers and fans alike.
Top Alcohol Dragster : Jackie Fricke (far lane), 5.319, 267.32 def. Joey Severance, 5.286, 273.94. Fricke had the advantage off the line and she held on to take the holeshot win (.042 to .076) by about 6 inches. This was her fourth NHRA National event win.
Top Alcohol Funny Car : Chris Marshall (far lane), Chevy Camaro, 5.709, 263.05 def. Doug Gordon, Camaro, 6.155, 261.93. Marshall got the starting line advantage and never trailed as Gordon lost traction right at the hit. Marshall started to lose traction and pedaled it. Gordon also pedaled it but couldn't get it to hook up. The two have never met before in the final round, although Gordon won all three of their matches at previous events.
Competition Eliminator: Doug Lambeck (far lane), Pontiac Sunfire, 8.507, 146.05 def. Josh Lee, Bantam roadster, 9.371, 110.46. Lambeck had a .021 to .134 Reaction Time advantage that kept him ahead to the finish line.
Super Stock: Anthony Bertozzi (far lane), Pontiac Grand Am, 9.214, 142.45 def. Don Thomas, Grand Am, 10.602, 123.86. Stock Eliminator: Justin Jerome (near lane), Plymouth Duster, 10.818, 120.11 def. Ryan Mangus, Chevy Camaro, 10.858, 120.01. Jerome’s .007 RT to a .028 for Mangus gave him the advantage at the start.
