Mike Recchia (near lane) got the Pro Extreme win when Tommy D’Aprile turned on the red light.
First-time Professional Drag Racers Association winners Mike Recchia (Pro Extreme), James Hancock (Pro Nitrous) and Chris Powers (Extreme Pro Stock) joined past PDRA event winners José Gonzales (Pro Boost) and Travis Davis (Pro Extreme Motorcycle) as the 2017 PDRA East Coast Nationals event champions on Saturday, April 1.

A series of lengthy delays at the GALOT Motorsports Park-hosted event forced racing to continue past the local 11 p.m. curfew, allowing the completion of the five professional classes. Competition in the four sportsman classes –Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Pro Junior Dragster and Top Junior Dragster – is down to the semifinals and will be completed at the next PDRA race in Darlington, SC, May 18-20. The final round of Extreme Outlaw 632, between No. 1 qualifier Ken Quartuccio and No. 2 qualifier Johnny Pluchino, son of Pro Stock driver John Pluchino, will also be contested at Darlington. Bryan Sanders saved his best pass for last, setting a world record top speed of 268.40 mph during a 3.451-second victory over Daryl Ehrlich in the Top Fuel Hydro final of the Valley of the Sun Spring Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix.
With the crowd on its feet anticipating the big pass after Sanders went 267.96 mph during his semifinal bye run, the Houstonian delivered with a picture-perfect run that lit up the scoreboards.
"We knew the boat was going to do it. We had a feeling it was going to get there so we went after it and we did put a leg on it in the semis so we had the backup. We had that one last shot at it in the final and we got it,” Sanders said.
Sanders was joined in the winner's circle by Top Alcohol Hydro's Bob Pizza, Top Alcohol Flat's Tony Scarlata, Pro Mod's Shawn Reed (taking a break from NHRA Top Fuel dragster competition), and Pro Outlaw's Cole Allen.
Sportsman winners included Tom Roberts in Pro Eliminator, Dave Lipinski in Quick Eliminator, Bill McGuinn in Top Eliminator, Mike Munoz in Modified Eliminator, Armand Labarre in Stock Eliminator, Glendon Boehme in River Racer and Brian Marble in Personal Watercraft 1. [04/03/17]
VOLUME XIX, NUMBER 3 - March 2017
Greg Anderson, driver of the red Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro, raced to the sixth K&N Horsepower Challenge victory of his career in the shootout for the Pro Stock competitors on Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Last season, Anderson was christened the most winning driver ever in three decades of the Pro Stock bonus event, and he extended the historic note when he effectively defended the title at this year's K&N Horsepower Challenge. En route to the final, he disposed of Allen Johnson and KB Racing teammate Bo Butner, and he went on to take down Shane Gray in the money round with a 6.684-second pass at 205.47 mph to 6.699, 206.26.
We’ll have all the pro class results tomorrow. [04/03/17]
The class is open to blown alcohol and injected nitro cars. To learn more about the class or to enter events go to www.capracing.com/blown_alcohol_thunder.html or contact Rich Bailey at 503-370-9164. [04/03/17]
In addition, champions also will be crowned in Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Top Bracket and in two Jr. Dragster categories. [04/03/17]
