Sunday in Las Vegas, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Terry Chandler's Make-A-Wish 2017 Dodge Charger R/T team won its first Funny Car title of the year for Don Schumacher Racing's 299th win and that was followed by an all-DSR final in which three-time and reigning Top Fuel champion Antron Brown and the Matco Tool team beat teammate Tony Schumacher's U.S. Army team for No. 300.
The 68th double-up of nitro titles by DSR at the same race since 2003 was also the third time in four NHRA races this year when DSR won both Top Fuel and Funny Car titles.
Coincidentally, the same teams earned DSR its 199th and 200th wins; Johnny Gray was in what is now the Make-A-Wish Funny Car sponsored by his sister, Terry Chandler, and Brown was at the wheel of the Matco dragster.

Vick Helms of Catawba, SC, outlasted 46 others to win the Mopar Bracket Championship Saturday during the 26th annual Grffin Motors Mopars at the Rock all-Chrysler drag race and car show at Rockingham Dragway.
Helms and his 1972 Plymouth Duster got a free ride in the final when Greensboro’s Scott Cheek was guilty of a foul start in his 1968 Dodge Dart. Footbrake and Top ET racers ran separately until the fifth round, setting up a free-for-all from which Helms emerged victorious for the Top ET contingent.
In the featured Hemi Shootout, former winner Tank Crosswhite of Glade Spring, VA, drove the Crosswhite Brothers’ Hemi-powered 1968 Dodge Dart to a final round win after a red light by Dan Meile of Jamesville, NY, driving a 1968 Plymouth Hemi-Barracuda for Salisbury’s “Bullet Bob” Reed.
Brian Roberts of Charlotte won the Charger Shootout with a 9.423 on a 9.400 after Patrick Ammon, Myrtle Beach, SC, broke out with a 10.179 on a 10.200 dial-in.
Mark Rantt claimed the Challenger Shootout with an 11.260 on a 10.800 dial after Paul Cannata, Attleboro, MA, ran a break-out 13-910 on a 14.00 dial.
Asheboro’s Tom Lauber claimed the Trophy bracket, ending the reign of James Lowe of Colfax who had won the Trophy class six straight years in his 1969 Dodge. Lauber’s ’65 Plymouth ran 13.987 on a 14.100 dial as Nat Wolfe broke out with a 12.173 on a 12.370 dial.
Lowe reached the third round Saturday before losing to the 2010 Jeep of Steve Goode Jr., Leesville, SC, who, one round later, was beaten by James Faulkner of Apex who subsequently lost to Lauber in a double-breakout showdown in the semifinals. [04/04/17]
VOLUME XIX, NUMBER 3 - March 2017
David Rampy’s Comp roadster at the Gatornationals.
David Rampy scored the elusive double-up at the Mar. 31-Apr. 2 NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at South Georgia Motorsports Park, taking home the trophy in both Comp Eliminator and Super Stock.
The veteran racer from Piedmont, AL, worked his way through eliminations and lined up with Bobby Dennis, Shorter, AL, in Super Stock for his first of two final rounds. Rampy took the early lead, which proved to be the difference, as he collected his fifth win in Super Stock on a holeshot running 10.152 seconds at 123.68 mph to Dennis’s 10.808, 124.45.
Rampy would then face off with Randy Daniels, Grantsboro, NC, in Comp Eliminator with his familiar ’32 roadster. Rampy again left first and crossed the finish line in 7.379 at 152.93 to secure the double-up and his 35th divisional win in Comp.
In the division’s Top Sportsman class it was Scott Underwood, Madison, AL, winning a close one over Sandy Wilkins. The pair left the line just .008 seconds apart as Underwood ran 7.314 on his 7.31 dial for his second win in Top Sportsman. Wilkins clocked in with a quicker 6.629 at 202.85 mph. Fellow Alabama racer Casey Spradlin joined Rampy and Underwood in the winner’s circle as he took home the NHRA Wally trophy in the Top Dragster in defeating reigning NHRA Lucas Oil National Champion Jeff Strickland by about four inches. Spradlin left the line with a .009-second reaction time and held on for the win.
The Southeast Division Summit Jr. Drag Racing League was also in action this weekend at SGMP with Morgan Wilson capturing the 13-17 year old category with a win over Madison Wilcox. Logan Westmoreland beat out Tucker Brown in the 10-12 class and Mathew Peterson downed Dylan MacNicol in the 6-9.
