There will be plenty of yellow and black this week at Englishtown.
The JEGS Mail Order team will field four entries during this weekend's NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, NJ. Six-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. (shown) will lead the effort behind the wheel of the JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Camaro in Pro Stock. Third-generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr. will be driving the SealMaster Top Fuel dragster fielded by Kalitta Motorsports and his father, Troy Sr., will compete in the J&A Service NHRA Pro Mod Series with his turbocharged Corvette.
Additionally, Al Kenny will be driving a JEGS.com Corvette for the first time in Super Gas. Kenny, the father of Jeg Coughlin Jr's wife, Samantha, is a former NHRA national champion in the Super Comp class. He also is a seven-time NHRA national event winner in the Super Comp and Super Gas classes. [06/07/17]
Even though the start of the NHRA coverage from Epping was moved to FS2 because of the NASCAR race running a bit long, the numbers were up last Sunday, June 4.
After about 20 minutes, the coverage moved back to FS1 and garnered 1,179,000 viewers and a 0.73 rating. Could the spectacular explosion of Terry McMillen, which was shown during the Cup race, have anything to do with the increased numbers?
The NASCAR Monster Energy Cup race preceding it had 3,356,000 viewers and a 2.07 rating. [06/07/17]
Vincent Nobile expects his luck to change in his Mountain View Tire Chevrolet Camaro starting at this weekend’s 48th annual NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, just two hours from his home.
“I would pretty much say the season has gone terrible so far,” said Nobile, who is currently eighth in points. “It’s definitely not what we expected to this point. But everyone has ups and downs, and I think we’ll be really good in Englishtown. In the past we’ve done well on this East Coast swing. We’ve haven’t been on the hot side yet, but it’s coming. It’s just a matter of time. We’re definitely looking forward to this weekend. I think it’s going to be a great race.”
The focus for the team is moving up in the points standing.
“The Countdown will be here before you know it,” Nobile said. “We need to make sure we turn the program around before that comes. We don’t want to start the Countdown in 10th. The lower you are, the harder it is to gain points back. We need to jump up and we need to start this weekend. It will be a challenge to move up a few spots, but we’re going to do our best moving forward.” [06/07/17]
The Hoosigian family has been drag racing sine 1969 and Tom has competed in bracket racing behind the wheel of his Super Comp dragster. He is also a crew chief and car builder, and he and his wife competed in Super Gas and Super Street. In 2005, his wife, Lynn, drove to the NHRA Division 1 Super Street championship. His two daughters and their children are also involved in drag racing. [06/07/17]
Rusty Cook, Super Rod points leader.
The IHRA’s Summit Sportsman National Championship will have twice the action June 9-11 as an event will be held at both US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI, and at Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, NC.
Point leaders heading into this weekend are Martin Blair (Top Sportsman), Johnny Tolisano (Top Dragster), Jerry Hatch (Super Stock), Merrill Schrimscher (Stock), Randal L. Langley (Quick Rod), Rusty Cook (Super Rod), and James McPherson Jr. (Hot Rod). [06/07/17]
Larry Jeffers Race Cars will be the exclusive manufacturer of Tim Wallace Motorsports-designed 7/8 scale 1955 Chevy bodies for Pro Mod and Top Sportsman competition.
Tim Wallace Motorsports, based in Meridian, ID, collaborated with Bob’s Pro-Fab Race Cars and John Bohannon concepts in the design. TMW sold 22 of the Chevy bodies, but needed to fill the growing demand for a carbon fiber version. They turned to Larry Jeffers Race Cars in Missouri.
“Jeffers is centrally located in the country and in the middle of all the major Top Sportsman and Pro Mod chassis shops in the U.S. and he can do carbon,” said Wallace, “therefore it was a no-brainer to get with Larry on this project.” [06/07/17]
