In Super Street, Joe Greco added another Sacramento National Open “Wally” to his collection when his ’69 AMX beat Steve Wellman’s ’63 Nova in the final round. David Butler and Eric Reyes were semifinalists.

Sabrina Capps won the A/Gas class eliminator for the second consecutive year, this time beating Ray Padgett’s ’63 Corvette in the final round. Both drivers recorded identical 7.628 times, with the win going to Capps via her .011 reaction time.

 

Other race Gas class results included Lee Roberts .029 RT, 8.641 ET, 154.71 mph over Chris Borges .052 RT, 8.619 ET, 152.68 mph in B/Gas; Chris Rea .005 RT, 9.600 ET, 137.78 mph defeated Mike Gillespie -.003 RT, 9.644 ET, 135.86 mph in C/Gas; Dave Sullivan .060 RT, 10.557 ET, 126.77 mph got by Sal DeRenzi, -.009 RT, 9.644 ET, 135.86 mph in D/Gas; and Dennis Paz .063 RT, 11.691 ET, 101.26 mph beat Jamie Harrison .109 RT, 11.653 ET, 111.74 mph in E/Gas.

Highlights of the Junior Drag Racing League action included Jacelyn Gonzaga winning both days of the doubleheader event. The Porter Ranch, Calif., racer beat Reese Poe in the Saturday night 6-9-year old final, and stopped Jake Hodges in the final on Sunday.

 

Hannah Cook of Novato, Calif., also went to two finals, stopping Las Vegas racer Brianna Wiens for the 15-17-year old class win on Sunday, but lost to Cade Poe in the Saturday night final.

 

Other Saturday night JDRL finals included: Morgan Clinton .125 RT, 8.945/72.16 defeated Cy Mitchell .120 RT, 8.932/74.19 in 10-12-year old; Taylor Taylor .010 RT, 7.954/81.07 defeated Mav Molloy, .040 RT, 8.018/80.43 in 13-14-year old; and AJ Thomas .060 RT, 6.900/96.48 defeated Dylan Oliveira, .028 RT, 6.891/98.47 in Junior Comp.

 

Sunday finalists included Drake Padgett defeating Jessica Boardman, 10-12-year old; Braiden Chesleigh .029 RT, 8.011/79.38 stopped DeAndre Fitzgerald, .036 RT, 8.243/80.09 in 13-14-year old; and Damon Bustamante .031 RT, 6.926/98.29 defeated Dylan Oliveira, .043 RT, 6.864/100.54 in Jr. Comp.

Pinoski Captures Stock/Super Stock Title

Cool, dry weather made for record-setting performances in the Stock/Super Stock classes at the annual NHRA National Open at Sacramento Raceway Park on May 5-7.

NHRA national records were set by Steve Wann (A/SA), Jerry Mendes (SS/EA), and Steve Valkanoff (R/SA).

 

Rich Pinoski of Placerville, Calif., drove his ’67 Chevy Nova to a final round win over Larry Gilley’s ’69 Dodge Dart for the class title. Pinoski  qualified in the No. 25 spot but had a .012 RT and 10.232 to beat Gilley’s .025 RT plus 10.700 ET. Jerry Stein and Nanette Stein were semifinalists.

Shawn Steele of Tracy, Calif., was the winner of Top Comp (Top Dragster/Top Sportsman) when he drove his dragster to a final round win over the Top Sportsman Pontiac of Ted Kellner of San Jose, Calif. Top qualifier Melissa Fedrick lost in the semifinal to Steele.

Charlie Waggoner Jr. (near lane) of Los Angeles won the Super Comp title for the second time at Sacramento, also winning in 2013, as after identical Reaction Times he beat Greg Taylor in the final round 8.928 to 8.939. Nick Saetes lost to Taylor in the semifinals.

 

Lon Wilburn of San Bruno drove his ’76 Monza to the winner’s circle in Super Gas for the second straight year, turning in a holeshot .015 RT and 9.911 to beat Shawn Steele’s .037 RT and 9.868 in the final. Marko Perivolaris and Jim Finn were semifinalists.
