Give the people what they want to see and they will come

Bristol Dragway announced that the free taping of a Street Outlaws event on Tuesday, Aug. 22, reached capacity and track officials had to stop admitting vehicles to the property.

 

“What an amazing turnout at this episode taping of the Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws,” said Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway. “We knew the show was tremendously popular, however we didn’t anticipate a turnout this strong for a Tuesday night. It’s a testament to the show’s popularity, the power of social media engagement and the opportunity for fans to be a part of history. We sincerely apologize to any fans of the show who were not able to join us.”

 

A top prize of $100,000, the largest purse in show history, was on the line when 32 of the show's biggest stars competed at Thunder Valley. Milan braces for street-legal grudge racing

On Friday Aug. 25, and Saturday Aug. 26, drag racers from all over the country will descend on Milan Dragway for Motor City Mayhem 5, the single biggest grudge racing event in Michigan with over $30,000 in cash prizes up for grabs.

 

This two-day grudge racing event is known as a No ET (No Elapsed Time) event, where similar to street racing, drivers aren’t restricted to competing in brackets based on track times and are free to name their own races with other participants. These events started as a way to combat street racing by giving racers a safe environment to fulfill their need for speed and have developed into cars the racers wouldn’t dream of racing on the street.

 

“If you liked the Roadkill Nights street racing event on Woodward, you’ll love Motor City Mayhem 5,” said Deneen Baxter, Vice President of Milan Dragway. “Racers come from all over the country for this event. It’s two days of burning rubber, cool cars, big cash prizes, and plenty of smack talk, because with no times posted, drivers can set up their own races and negotiate for them to be any way they want. It’s a little like The Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws, but with a much bigger race pool and plenty of off-track activities! Who cares about ET or speed?

Keeping with today’s theme of the “No ET” type of drag racing, we have some results from Quain Stott’s recent Southeast Gassers Association event at Mountain Park Dragway in Clay City, KY.

Former Pro Mod racer Quain Stott has turned to driving a Gasser.

Quain’s son Donovan (near lane) took the A/Gas win over Kenneth Phillips.

Todd Blackwell was the C/Gas winner, getting through four rounds of competition to take on Danny Byrd in the final.

Sportsman racers get Brainerd wins

A couple of brothers of Big Show drivers got sportsman wins Sunday evening during the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

 

Justin Ashley, Plainview, NY, squared off against Gord Gingles of Winnipeg, M.B., in the Top Alcohol Dragster finale. Gingles emerged first from the gate, but his dragster succumbed to mechanical issues; Ashley swung around the Canadian driver for his second career national event Wally trophy. Ashley clocked in at 5.237 seconds, 268.60 mph to Gingles’ 12.344 seconds, 54.22 mph.

Johan Lindberg, Upplands Vasby, SWE, brother of 2016 Top Alcohol Funny Car World Champion Jonnie Lindberg, took the starting line against Kris Hool, out Evansville, WY, in the final round of Top Alcohol Funny Car. After the launch, Hool had issues maintaining his car in the center of the lane; Lindberg was able to pass him for the win. Local Stock Eliminator runner of International Falls and brother of 2016 Mello Yello Pro Stock Champion Jason Line, Ben Line, captured his first national event Wally, cutting a great light (.005 RT), keeping fellow local driver Bill Feist of Maple Grove at bay. Line recorded a victory pass of 10.533 seconds, 118.45 mph.

 

Similar to Line, Brian Heath, Annetta, TX, made the most of his Top Sportsman final round. The Texan cut a great light (.004 RT) and scored his first national event victory; ousting Joseph Mohana, Bourg, LA, in the process. Heath finished his run at 7.152 seconds, 185.41 mph.

 

In the Top Dragster final, local racer Bob Fischer of Gibbon, came off the starting line hot and never let up taking his first national event Wally. Fischer upended fellow Minnesota driver Michael Kritzky of Saint Paul Park, at 7.403 seconds, 176.33 mph.

 

The other driver visiting the winner’s circle were Eric Bell 9.301/127.10 over Darrell Dietzh (red light) in Super Stock; Trevor Larson 8.891/172.63 over Jeremy Demers 8.886/177.23 in Super Comp; and Jim Davis 9.971/157.83 over Ken Griffiths 9.995/148.58 in Super Gas. Pro Stock Snowmobile was also in action with Glenn Hall taking the win over Scott Hagen, 8.186/154.94 to 8.319/155.29.  [08/23/17]

Second Michigan DRO event changed to match race

The DRO AA/FC Challenge open competition event previously scheduled for US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI, on Sept. 8-9 has been changed to a six-car match race by the track promoter, Jason Peterson.

 

Racers taking part in this event will be Shawn Bowen, John Hale, Greg “Jake” Jacobsmeyer, Mike McIntire, Paul Romine, and Ronny Young (shown).

Wave of the future?

With drag racing and circle track racing losing spectator numbers, the Agent may have some grim news for the future of automobile racing.

 

LendEDU just published the results of a recent poll they conducted that highlighted the most recent automobile trends among millennials.

 

A couple of key highlights: 20.76% of car-owning millennials do not believe cars will be necessary in 20 years; 50.1% would prefer to buy a “green” car over a traditional car, while 42.51% would give up manually driving a car for a self-driving car.  [08/23/17]
