The 2017 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series concluded its final regional event Sunday, Nov. 5, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Several World championships were clinched along with all the 2017 NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional and Regional Championships . After clinching the 2017 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Super Stock World championship at the resent Toyota NHRA Nationals, Justin Lamb, Henderson, Nev., clinched the Stock World championship to become just the third driver in NHRA history to win two world championships in the same season.

Austin Williams, Burleson, Texas, locked up the Super Comp World championship, and Lynn Ellison, Central City, Ky., captured the 2017 Top Dragster World championship.

Shawn Cowie, Surrey, B.C., got the TAD win, earning his 21st divisional trophy and the West Regional title. David Rampy, Piedmont, Ala., was Comp Eliminator champ.

After 23 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events and 67 rounds of Sunday eliminations this year, it comes down to one critical weekend for reigning Funny Car world champion Ron Capps and Don Schumacher Racing's NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler.

Capps and his team Powered by Pennzoil already have had a miraculous season by winning a series-best and career-best eight NHRA Wally trophies including two of five in the Countdown to the Championship playoff, which concludes this weekend with the NHRA Finals that begins Friday at Pomona, Calif.

Tobler and assistant Eric Lane have tuned the NAPA Dodge into 12 final rounds and won four straight events in April and May, each of which are career bests for Capps. They start the Finals with a 52-15 record in elimination rounds, and two round wins this Sunday will match Capps' career best set a year ago.

The NAPA team dominated the 18-race regular season this year and sat atop the championship points standings after 16 of 23 races, but will be ranked No. 2 this weekend after John Force Racing's Robert Hight, who also has won twice in the Countdown, took the lead by 15 points two weeks ago at the penultimate event near Las Vegas.

For 2017, NHRA put added emphasis on the Pomona finale by increasing points values by 150 percent meaning a driver can collect up to 191 compared to 130 a year ago. A driver can earn up to 16 qualifying bonus points (was 12), 10 instead of eight for winning the pole, and 30 instead of 20 for each round win on Sunday.

Tom Bailey from Lake Orion, MI, has entered his Hemi-powered ’72 Oldsmobile in the 13th annual Street Car Super Nationals Nov. 16-19 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Milan Dragway standout has run the screw blower-powered car in the 5.70s and is hoping to better that at his second appearance at the event.

Reed’s Ginger Brew will join Mooneyes in sponsorship of the Jim Dunn Racing team at the NHRA Finals in Pomona. The race team will showcase the popular Mooneyes yellow Funny Car with the addition of the Reed’s logo.

The Funny Car will be on display with an autograph session at Sprout’s market near the Pomona Fairplex track for Reed’s Ginger Brew this Thursday and then Wednesday following the race driver Jim Campbell will be in St. Louis signing autographs at multiple Menards stores. The only thing able to stop an indomitable Dale Hamilton during the International Drag Bike League World Finals at Rockingham Dragway was Sunday night fog so thick that it obscured the Christmas Tree starting system and forced the cancelation of the final seven races of the show.

Hamilton was one of four two-wheel bracket racers still in contention for a $10,000 winner’s purse in Sunday’s feature event when the weather intervened.

As a result, the Mount Airy, Md., rider had to settle for splitting the winner, runner-up and semifinal money with three others including his brother Kevin. The other two sharing in the bounty were Matt Davies of Petersburg, Va., and Luis Reyes of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Otherwise, it was all Dale Hamilton-all-the-time at The Rock. The Maryland rider won Pro ET on Friday, won Pro ET on Saturday and won the Pro ET Tournament of Champions on Sunday. That, coupled with his performance in the $10,000 race, would have earned him the MVP award, hands down.

A total of 407 bikes raced in the event, 150 of them in the $10,000 ET Showdown.
