Franklin leads qualifying at Outlaw Street Car Reunion

The Outlaw Street Car Reunion VI event is in progress this weekend in Bowling Green, KY. With 35 Pro Mods in attendance, the #1 qualifier on Thursday night was Tommy Franklin of Fredricksburg, VA, with a 3.671 elapsed time.

Other class leaders include Jack Green (above) of Knoxville, TN, in Radial Vs the World (3.73); X-275, Rich Bruder of Edison, NJ (4.29); LDR Neil Hawkins, (4.13); and in Ultra Street, Joel Greathouse (4.66).     

Day to drive replacement body at Tucson; Maroney goes to Houston

After Jim Maroney blew the body off of the Candies and Hughes “Cajun Cuda” at the Good Vibrations March Meet last month, owner Jim Broome found an awesome replacement for the shredded fiberglass remnants. Broome’s team has just finished mounting a new 1979 Dodge Omni to debut his “Speed Sport” entry this weekend at the Good Vibrations United Nitro Funny Cars season opener at the Tucson Dragway Reunion April 12-13.

 

March Meet AA/Fuel Altered champ James Day, no stranger to nitro funny cars, will drive the new ride at Tucson Dragway while regular driver Jim Maroney heads to the NHRA SpringNationals in Houston to drive Texas drag-boat racer Kim Davidson’s Top Fuel Dragster.

Last weekend’s ANDRA Grand Final brought the 2018/19 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series season to a record-breaking conclusion with eight Australian national records reset at the Perth Motorplex event. All are quarter-mile records.

Tutterow looking for second NHRA Pro Mod win

Todd Tutterow claimed his first career NHRA victory win at Gainesville in the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service. In a record-setting field and against an opponent who made the quickest run in the history of the class in the final round, Tutterow won on a holeshot.

 

Houston marks the second 2019 appearance by the Pro Mods. Other part-time categories at Houston Raceway Park this weekend include the first 2019 appearance of the Mountain Motor Pro Stocks, along with Top Fuel Harleys and the Factory Stock Challenge. Something for everybody. 

More teams qualify for HROT competition

Two more teams have qualified for the 2019 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow dual National Championship.

 

Team Derale Performance moved on from the engine challenge competition held April 6 at York County School of Technology in York, PA, and Teams FAST and FiTech qualified at the Tulsa Technology Center in Broken Arrow, OK, also on April 6.

 

The competition consists of high school students tearing down and rebuilding an engine in the shortest time possible. Winning team members receive scholarships to sponsoring technical schools. Two championship playoffs will be held at the SEMA Show, Nov. 5-8 in Las Vegas, and the PRI Show, Dec. 12-14 in Indianapolis.

Off the Track: Just months after country allows women to drive, Saudi woman races into history

Reema Juffali, one of the first female race car drivers from Saudi Arabia, made her F4 British Championship Circuit debut last weekend at the legendary Brands Hatch Indy track in England. Although the 27-year-old’s last-place finish in her inaugural race on Saturday was less than she had hoped for (and stemmed largely from an unexpectedly extended pit stop), her participation alone was a resounding victory for the image of Saudi women as it shattered one more glass ceiling.

On Sunday, Juffali improved her performance with a 9th place finish in the first race of the day and an 11th place finish in the second of the day’s two competitions.

 

Given that women were not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia until last June, sitting in the cockpit of a single-seater race car is an accomplishment few would have predicted for a Saudi woman. Juffali, who completed her education in the United States before accepting a Dubai-based job in finance, took her first competitive laps last October behind the wheel of a Toyota GT86 road car at a TRD 86 Cup race at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit.

 

Juffali grabbed two class podiums in her debut at Abu Dhabi and won her first race there in December. She then segued to single-seater racing in India’s MRF Challenge, making her debut earlier this year at the season finale in Chennai. In addition to joining the MRF Challenge, Juffali has continued competing in the TRD 86 Cup where she now leads the Silver category and currently holds third place overall.

 

As surprising as it may seem, Juffali is not the first Saudi woman to take laps around an asphalt circuit. Nineteen-year-old Reem Al Aboud took some test laps around the track before the start of the Formula E competition in Ad Diriyah, just outside Riyadh, last December, and Aseel Al Hamad took a lap in a Renault F1 car before the start of the French Grand Prix held on the same day that the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia was lifted.
