FANS VOTE ENDERS INTO K&N HORSEPOWER CHALLENGE

Thanks to her loyal fans, Erica Enders will be taking part in this weekend’s K&N Horsepower Challenge, a special race-within-a-race at Las Vegas for the top eight Pro Stock drivers from the previous 12 months. Enders earned the final spot in the elite field through the online fan vote.

 

"Our fans have proved, once again, to be the best in all of motorsports," Enders said. "I feel so blessed and I am so thankful for their incredible support. We will do everything we can to show our appreciation by running the wheels off this Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro to try and win this year's K&N Horsepower Challenge.

 

"I feel a lot of confidence with our racecar right now," she added. "We qualified No. 3 at the last race in Gainesville and had a really great car until we shook the tires in Round 2 of eliminations. We stayed after the event and tested until we got the car completely figured out so we have a good feeling coming to Vegas. BEN BRAY COULD MAKE A BIG MOVE IN ANDRA CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS CHASE

Despite only joining the 2016/2017 ANDRA title chase at its mid-point earlier this year, thanks to strong results 32-year-old Ben Bray is currently fourth on the ladder ahead of this weekend’s Grand Final event at Adelaide International Raceway.

 

With second-place Mark Belleri and third-place Grant O’Rourke unable to attend the Finale, by participating in qualifying Bray can find himself on the third step of the podium. If he can make it to the final round of the event, he will be crowned the Top Doorslammer title runner-up.

 

“To be heading to the ANDRA Grand Final this weekend with a chance of being the title runner-up despite our late entry into the fight is a testament to the commitment of the team and the support of our sponsors, especially Gulf Western Oil,” Bray said.

 

“With their support behind us we have been able to mount a strong campaign since coming back to full-time competition earlier this year, and by virtue of that we find ourselves in the box-seat to stand on the ANDRA title podium which would be a great preamble to our full tilt at the 17/18 championship chase.” [03/28/17]

GRADDEN RUNS 5.95 IN AUSTRALIA TESTING FOR SIGRA

Here’s a look from the Saturday test session for the Sigra team at Sydney Dragway Track championships with Geoff Gradden finishing with a 5.95-second run at 241 mph.

CHARLES CARPENTER CRASHES '55 AT DARLINGTON

Agent 1320 was distressed to hear that old friend and one of the Pro Mods founding racers, Charles Carpenter, crashed his iconic 1955 Chevy during a doorslammer event at Darlington Dragway, SC, last weekend.

 

Details are sketchy but according to son Mike Carpenter the wall-brushing accident was just a result of hard racing in the final round. Charles was unhurt but the status of the '55 is unknown at this time.  (DRO file photo) [03/28/17]

OUTLAW 632 CLASS TO MAKE FIRST PDRA COMPETITION AT GALOT

The all-eighth-mile series experienced its attendance record at GALOT in 2016.

 

The PDRA East Coast Nationals, March 30-April 1, will see the stars of Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Pro Boost and nine other classes compete on the GALOT Motorsports Park eighth mile for the first of two GALOT races in 2017. The PDRA returns to the Benson, NC, facility for the PDRA Drag Wars, Sept. 7-9.

 

In addition to the touring regulars of the pro classes, the PDRA East Coast Nationals will feature sportsman racing in the form of Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Pro Junior Dragster, Top Junior Dragster, and the Edelbrock Bracket Bash. The increasingly popular Outlaw 632 class will make its first of four appearances with the PDRA this weekend, too. Also booked in for Friday and Saturday is a four-car, Chicago-style race between four supercharged AA/Gassers. [03/28/17]

MISSOURI STREET CAR SHOOTOUT BEGINS THIS WEEK AT ST. LOUIS

The Missouri Street Car Shootout will hold seven events at Gateway Motorsports Park's Dragplex in Madison, IL, in 2017. The first event will take place on Sunday, April 2, during the ET Bracket Series presented by Carl's 4-Wheel Drive & Performance Center meet. The entry fee is $35.

 

Rules: Vehicle must have current registration and tags with VIN-matching license plate. Any engine combination is allowed. Any transmission allowed. Any transmission controller allowed. Any transmission valve body allowed. Any power adder or combination of power adders allowed. Any tire type and size allowed. Any suspension allowed. Any exhaust allowed. Any fuel types allowed. Any carburetor or fuel injection system allowed. No minimum weight. Towing to or from the starting line and shutdown area is prohibited. Tube chassis is prohibited. Pro tree. Trophy/plaque to each event winner.

BLIND DRAG RACER LOOKING TO SET LAND SPEED RECORD

Despite the devastation of losing his sight in a severe drag racing accident five years ago, Dan Parker refuses to give up his love of speed and competition. “I’m not a blind man who wants to go racing,” he declares. “I’m a racer who just happened to go blind.”

 

Within months of his life-changing crash, the 2005 American Drag Racing League Pro Nitrous World Champion began personally constructing a three-wheeled cycle car powered by a single-cylinder engine that he eventually drove at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

“It was August of 2014 and I set an official speed record for the 50 to 85 cc cycle car—and it has no exemption for blindness—it’s just a true class record at the Salt Flats. My official record is 62.05 miles per hour, which is the average speed after making two one-mile runs in opposite directions,” Parker explains.

 

Now working alone in a plain, single-car garage behind his tidy, suburban Columbus home, the 46-year-old is in the midst of constructing a much bigger and faster machine. With plans to compete early in 2018 in the Loring Timing Association’s (LTA) standing-mile event at Limestone, Maine, Parker is building a classic, open-wheeled “lakester” car, destined to be powered by a Fulton Competition-built, big-block Chevy engine.

“The chassis is sort of like a front-engined dragster, but the motor is moved farther forward so that the weight is more centered, and it’ll have an aluminum body that encloses everything, including the motor, with a canopy that comes down over the cockpit,” he says. “I designed and built the car pretty much by myself. I’ve cut, notched and fitted probably 90 percent of the tubes in the car and I’ve tack welded probably 50 percent of them before a couple of guys I know come over and do the final welding on them. And my intention is to shape and attach 100 percent of the body by myself.”

 

The current world’s fastest blind man went 204-plus miles per hour, but he did it with a sighted person riding beside him in a modified production car.

 

“I want to become the world’s fastest blind man at 225 miles per hour, in a car I built myself, and with no human assistance beside me.”

 

Parker will, however, have an onboard guidance system created by Patrick Johnson at MFI Electronics, similar to the one Johnson built for the cycle car that emits a series of beeps in each side of Parker’s helmet that increase in speed and intensity depending on which side the vehicle deviates from the race course center line.
