For the first time NMRA/NMCA will offer a full Thursday Test & Tune on July 27 to all Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing competitors.
The largest street car drag racing event of the year, the 12th Annual Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing presented by Precision Turbo takes place at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL, the weekend of July 27-30. This is one of only two events that bring all the cars and all the stars of NMRA and NMCA drag racing the same weekend.
“The addition of the full Thursday Test & Tune is a direct result of Route 66 Raceway and NMRA/NMCA listening to our racers and reacting to their needs,” said Rollie Miller, National Event Director for NMRA and NMCA. “Improving the racer experience is the essence of our ProPledge customer service commitment. Previously we had been unable to accommodate a full Friday Test & Tune and we are now able to offer it as a Thursday option.”
Heads-up and index racers can expert track prep from TJ Bailey, the official starter of NMRA and NMCA, and Kurt Johnson of Total Venue Concepts. Test & Tune entries can be purchased for an additional fee at the NMRA/NMCA registration trailer at the event. [07/06/17]
Three-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion Larry Dixon will headline the lineup for the 64th annual World Series of Drag Racing to be held Aug. 25-27 at Cordova International Raceway.
In addition, IHRA President, Mike Dunn, and his former car owner, Roland Leong, will serve as Grand Marshals.
The early list of the program includes: Nitro Funny Cars, Jet Dragsters, Fuel Altered Dragsters, Midwest Nostalgia Pro Stocks, Nostalgia Gassers, Chicagoland Super Stocks, Mountain Motor Pro Stocks, Nitro Harleys, the Pro Mod Shootout and Richard Hutchins' famed “Chevy Rebellion” Wheelstander.
What remains to be seen is if the longtime Cordova fans will forgive and forget and return to see the event that returns to Cordova, IL, after a disastrous move to Memphis last year. [07/06/17]
Steve Johnson will run in his 400th race this weekend at the Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals in Joliet, IL. Since the Pro Stock Motorcycles don’t run in every NHRA national event, that has taken the Alabama rider 30 years to accomplish.
And though he has only six event wins, he’s never lost the competitive spirit that the next race might be his.
“As any and every racer will tell you, there’s something about drag racing that grabs ahold of your soul and doesn’t let go until you take your last breath,” Johnson said. “There may be a lot of negatives to being a drag racer, but let me assure you, in the strongest terms possible, that the positives outweigh the negatives by tons.” [07/06/17]
The Texas Outlaw Pro Mod Association will headline the show Saturday, July 8, at the Texas Motorplex. Two rounds of qualifying begin at 5 p.m. with elimination rounds following at about 7:10 p.m.
In addition, Index classes of 5.50, 6.0, and 7.0 will runs as well as Jr. Dragsters. [07/06/17]
Nitro Up North is famous for bringing Top Fuel dragsters to Darwin, but they won’t be the only nitro-fueled machines making their impression on Hidden Valley Drag Strip come July 21-22.
Queensland’s Chris Matheson choses to pour the infamous explosive race fuel into a motorcycle – and it’s Australia’s quickest vehicle on two wheels, capable of covering a quarter mile (402m) drag strip in just 6.04 seconds.
Riders in the Top Bike class where Matheson competes are among the bravest in motorsport. Matheson himself has ridden the highs and the lows of extreme drag racing, including a fall at over 350kmh (217mph) in Sydney and a bizarre electrocution last time he was in Darwin.
“We have raced at Hidden Valley in the past, however, it didn’t end well,” he explained. “During the first round of racing we blew a spark plug (and lead) out of the cylinder head, which hit me in the chest, pumping 45,000 volts (44 amps) through my body. The shock blew my hands off the handle bars, which nearly resulted in me being blown off the bike. Eventually, I got the bike stopped and was taken to Darwin Base Hospital, where I spent some time in the ICU.”
The multi-time national champion has not let such incidents stop him from continuing to chase records and there is one target he would love to achieve – being the first drag racer in the Southern Hemisphere to run a five second pass on a motorcycle.
Matheson’s Nitro Voodoo team will be taking on a talented field of nitro bikes that also includes the world’s fastest amputee, Benny Stevens, who recently returned from racing in the USA, former champions Mark Drew, Chris Porter, Ian Ashelford and more.
The nitro bikes will be joined by Top Fuel Dragsters and Pro Slammers in the 400 Thunder Professional Drag Racing Series, plus the opening round of the Summit Sportsman Series’ national 2017/18 season. [07/06/17]
The American Drag Racing League has announced that Pro Stock legend and Pro Mod racer Larry Morgan has agreed to assume the role of President of the ADRL.
Jeff Biegun, CEO of the ADRL, has been acting as President since Kenny Nowling stepped down as President on April 20, 2017. Nowling's role most recently was as the announcer and MC of the ADRL, but he is now stepping completely away from the ADRL.
Long-time Maryland International Raceway (MDIR) and IHRA announcer Fabian Brown will become the new voice of the ADRL and assume the MC position starting with the US DRAGS at Dragway 42 September 7-8. [07/06/17]
"Looking over the landscape of Pro Stock, it's really quite an accomplishment to bring a company the size and caliber of Melling into a title sponsorship role," team owner Richard Freeman said. "It reflects well on the entire class, the NHRA, and our friends at FOX as well. Exposure for our sport and more importantly our sponsors is growing and that's important to the long-term economic vitality of our race team." [07/06/17]
Who would have guessed that the Southwest Heritage Racing Association would have to postpone the nostalgia drags at Paris Drag Strip in July because of rain?
The typically hot and dry Texas weather has been anything but that, and the area in northeast Texas has been inundated with rains in the past week, topping 10 inches.
With the facility too wet for spectator and pit parking, the July 8 event has been rescheduled to August 5. [07/06/17]
The Mid Atlantic .90 Series returns to Numidia Dragway after almost a four-year hiatus from the Central Pennsylvania facility.
The series that consists of Super Comp (8.90 Index .370 Pro Tree), Super Gas (9.90 Index .400 Pro Tree) and Super Street (10.90 Index .500 Pro Tree) is open to any and all NHRA and IHRA legal cars.
The series has already completed four events this season at Atco Dragway and Cecil County Dragway. Bill Hardifer (Super Comp), Hank Smith (Super Gas) and Dom Burgese (Super Street) lead the points coming into races 5 and 6 at Numidia.
To sweeten the pot for this event track owner Bob Dimino and Mid Atlantic .90 President Rob Keister are putting up a guaranteed $1,500 to win in all three classes on Saturday and Sunday along with a one-of a kind laser cut trophy done by S&W Race Cars and big checks courtesy of Inmotion Solutions. There is also a guaranteed $2,000 to win bracket race on both Saturday and Sunday. [07/06/17]
