Puerto Rican racers will be at Australian ‘Jamboree’

This month’s Honeywell Garrett Jamboree presented by Tuners Edge and Link ECU, will host no fewer than four international drag racing stars all the way from Puerto Rico. The official Jamboree event will be held at Willowbank Raceway August 26-27.

To celebrate, a special Open Night will be held to officially welcome the international racers and their crews on Monday, Aug. 21, from 6 p.m. by Jamboree Tour Naming Rights Partner, Oceania College of Technology. Race fans are invited to attend.

Each of the four Puerto Rican all-star team will attend the Open Night event along with their fast-paced machines: Isaias Rojas and the Mech-Tech 2JZ-powered Scion, the third quickest import car in the world; Edwin Burgos and the Loquito Killer 20B-powered Mazda RX8, which is the second quickest 20B Rotary in the world; Jorge Juarbe and the El Humilde 2JZ-powered Toyota Corolla AE86, the world’s Fastest 3/4 Chassis Car; and Luis Rivera and the Rafaelito Racing 13B-powered Mazda RX8 – the world’s quickest 13B Rotary-engine vehicle.

Jamboree Directors, Collin Willshire and Ray Box, said the Open Night would provide the perfect preamble to two big days of racing at what is expected to be an awesome Jamboree 2017.

“The world-beating performances of these four teams is well known and respected,” Box said, “and I know our Australian competitors can’t wait to go up against them in battle across August 26 and 27 when we get down to racing.”

Shortage of N20 continues in some areas

A 2016 explosion at a nitrous oxide production plant in Florida continues to impact many in the racing community, SEMA reports. There are only a few production plants in the U.S. and the Florida plant produced an estimated 40% of the North American supply. The plant is still not operating after the explosion, which killed a plant worker and caused extensive damage.

Following the accident, the companies producing nitrous prioritized shipments for medical use.

Many areas of the country are not reporting shortages, although prices may be significantly higher due to lessened supply. However, it remains a problem in some areas for local gas suppliers. It is currently anticipated that nationwide supplies will be returning to normal by the fourth quarter of 2017.

Chevrolet drops sponsorship of Woodward Cruise; Ford steps in

Chevrolet has quietly dropped its longstanding presenting sponsorship of the Woodward Dream Cruise, the Detroit News reports.

Chevy would not say when it decided to drop the sponsorship after six years in the driver’s seat, other than it was earlier this year.

Since 2011, Chevrolet had been the largest sponsor of the annual classic car cruise, held the third Saturday of August along historic Woodard Avenue. The event, in its 23rd year, stretches from Ferndale north to Pontiac. It draws an estimated 1 million-plus spectators and 40,000 classic, muscle and collector cars.

“We evaluate our sponsorships on a regular basis and make adjustments to our strategy based on our business needs,” a Chevrolet spokeswoman said. “While we are no longer the sponsor, we still see great value in engaging with Chevy fans, so we will continue to have our displays in Birmingham and Royal Oak to showcase our products and celebrate the summer tradition of cruising along Woodward Avenue.”

The popular annual street-cruising event that takes place this year on Aug. 19 has since secured a new presenting sponsor – Ford Motor Co.
