Pointless mags legal in NHRA Heritage FC series

The system 1 magneto installed in "California Hustler" for testing. The NHRA tech department has officially changed the Heritage Series Nitro Funny Car rules to allow pointless (MSD) 12-amp magnetos as an option. This change was made according to NHRA’s Glen Grey after the Nostalgia Funny Car team owners convinced the Tech Dept. that allowing the MSD 12-amp mag could significantly decrease the amount of massive engine damage the class has been experiencing.

The rules do not eliminate the use of the current points type mags. Currently there is just one source making a 12-amp pointless mag based on the MSD 12-amp generator that Bob Wyman and the System One company has built. Ronnie Swearingen tested the Wyman mag earlier this year in the “California Hustler” he tunes and reportedly is satisfied with the mag.

NHRA YES program increases focus on STEM education

The NHRA Youth and Education Services (YES) Program, presented by the U.S. Army, will feature a stronger focus on S.T.E.M education in 2018 as it enters into its 30th season. Next year will also see an expansion in the YES Program  schedule with a presence at 16 out of the 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series national events.

“Thanks to the generous support of the U.S. Army, NHRA’s YES Program continues to flourish, reaching tens of thousands of students each year,” said Glen Cromwell, NHRA senior vice president, media and marketing. “We want to continue that momentum with a stronger focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These fields are fundamental for the future and NHRA drag racing offers a myriad of career paths related to S.T.E.M. education.”

The events on the 2018 YES schedule are, in chronological order: Pomona, Phoenix, Gainesville, Las Vegas, Houston, Charlotte, Atlanta, Topeka, Joliet, Englishtown, Indianapolis, Reading, St. Louis, Dallas, Charlotte and Pomona.
