Racers pack Vegas for LODRS event

Yes, that’s a Prowler! (And, yeah, it’s got a Hemi.) Craig Maddox drove it to the Super Gas win.

Over 625 racers were on hand for the April 12-14 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Divisional at Las Vegas, marking one of the biggest Divisional/National events of the NHRA season so far.

Thorp takes Wednesday win at Spring Fling Million

First order of business for the K&N Spring Fling Million at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Wednesday, Apr. 17, was to finish the American Race Cars/Brando Custom Paint Dragster Shootout left from Tuesday night. In the final round Gary Williams left first by virtue of his 4.66 dial-in with a .005 reaction time, but a .012 and dead-on the dial with “3” was enough to reward Jeff Burns (above) with a new race car to take home to Tennessee.

Eliminations for Wednesday’s main event then began at roughly 10 a.m. and by the time the first round was complete at around 2:50 p.m., 562 entries had competed.

In the ninth and final round, Kevin Thorp (shown) and former Fling winner John Labbous were matched, but Labbous went red by -.004, giving Thorp $30,000 for the win.

“So unbelievable,” said Thorp, from Knickerbocker, TX. “I was good when I had to be good and lucky when I needed to be lucky.”

Son of ‘Street Outlaws’ racer charged in street racing crash

Ronald Gray Pace III has been formally charged for his involvement in an injury accident resulting from an illegal street race held on a Houston, Texas-area road the night of March 17. Pace is the son of “Barefoot” Ronnie Pace, a native Texan who has made a number of appearances on the reality television program Street Outlaws.

Two men were seriously injured when they were stuck by Pace’s Camaro as it raced down Houston Oaks Drive, located in a business park in the Northwest corner of the city. The car then struck a parked pickup truck before coming to rest in a business parking lot.

Pace faces two counts of felony street racing causing serious bodily injury, and faces two to 20 years in prison. The other racer involved in the incident left the scene and has not yet been positively identified. However, video of the event is in the possession of the police and the District Attorney’s office believes another arrest will come soon.

Ironically, the incident happened over the weekend that Houston Raceway Park hosted it annual TX2K, a sanctioned drag racing event.
