ADRL releases Corzine as race director; Nostalgia Gasser group hires him

Bubba Corzine, who has been race director for all of the iterations of the ADRL as well as several other eighth-mile doorslammer series, was let go from the ADRL series according to Corzine when contacted by the Agent. Corzine told the Agent that he and wife Letha, who ran the tower were "fired because we were too expensive."

Nowling working for the ADRL at Martin?

Kenny Nowling's association with the ADRL evidently is continuing for the series at least the race this coming weekend at Martin, MI.

 

There is some confusion in the media concerning whether Kenny Nowling quit or was fired from the ADRL a month ago. What is known is that Nowling told the Agent that he would be at the next ADRL race in some capacity.  [06/19/17]

Murphy wins NTF at Hot Rod Reunion

Jim Murphy took the win in Nostalgia Top Fuel defeating James Young in the thrilling final round. Murphy was in his fifth consecutive final round but had yet to tally a win in over two years.

 

His dragster is tuned by legendary crew chief Roland Leong who kept the car going rounds during the day. Murphy trailed at the start of the run but was able to get around Young with a winning run of 5.713-seconds at 257.33 mph to the trailing run of Young at 5.920 at 253.56. Murphy, the 2013 Nostalgia Top Fuel champion, celebrated his birthday on Monday and takes the win as a belated present.

 

“The win is a monkey off my back as we kept having fluke things happen and it was one thing after another,” said Murphy. “We won this race in 2013 and went on to win the championship so maybe this will be an omen and we are leading the points now moving up from second.”

 

Winners in the other racing included Don Nave in 7.0 Pro, Darrell Wathen in 7.5 Eliminator, Nostalgia Super Stock was Doug Duell, Competition Eliminator was won by Skeeter Wayne, Top Stock Eliminator was John Meinelt, Modified Eliminator was Larry Key, the Gas Eliminator winner was Pat Freels, 348/409 Eliminator winner was Bryan Fugate, Hot Rod Eliminator was won by Chad Brewer, and Geezer Gassers was won by John Swiek.

Cline wins second Jr. Dragster title at Western Conference Finals

Hayley Cline won the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing Western Conference Finals presented by Huddleston Performance for the second time in her career to highlight the 2017 edition of the first of two national events in the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League.

 

Cline, the 2012 8-9 class champ, won this year’s 13-year-old age group and was joined in the winner’s circle by seven first-time winners: Nolan Baker (age 6-9), Gage Wilson (10), Jonathan McClain (11), Graeme Rufenacht (12), Caylyn Cunningham (14), Monica Roberts (15), and Colin Broermann. Host track Osage Tulsa Raceway Park dominated the team competition to earn its first team championship.

 

Led by the 16-17 age group finalists and several other late-round finishers Tulsa Raceway Park Team 2 won the team championship, the first team title for the Tulsa, Okla., track. Tulsa tallied 19 points to handily defeat Thunder Valley Raceway Park Team 1, which finished second with 13 points. SRCA Team 1 (12), Texas Motorplex Team 1 (11), and Texas Motorplex Team 2 and Royal Purple Raceway Team 2 (tied with 10) rounded out the top five.  (photo courtesy NHRA)  [06/19/17]

Millican gets first NHRA win

Clay Millican, a multi-time Top Fuel winner in IHRA, finally won his first NHRA race at the 2017 Thunder Valley Nationals in the University of Northwestern Ohio/Parts Plus/Great Clips Top Fuel Dragster.

 

It was an emotional win for the Tennessee native who has been runner-up eight times, before winning during his ninth final round appearance. He and his wife, Donna, lost their 22-year-old son Dalton in August 2015.

 

“Father’s Day is a tough day for anyone who lost a child,” Millican said. “Dalton was riding with me today. He got me four win lights. There is no such thing as a coincidence. When the time was right it was going to happen. Today the time was right.”

 

In the finals, Millican faced Leah Pritchett, who has won three times already this season but Millican got to the finish line first with a 3.825/316.38 to 3.881/307.09.

Bristol Pro Mod win goes to Troy Coughlin

Troy Coughlin powered to the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series victory Sunday at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by the Real Pro Mod Association, was the seventh of 12 events on the 2017 schedule.

 

Coughlin ran a 5.878-second pass at 253.09 mph in his JEGS Mail Order '15 Corvette to defeat No. 1 qualifier Shane Molinari and his S&T Truck Repair Inc. '68 Firebird’s 5.881 at 254.76 for his first win of the season.

 

“What can I say about those guys -- Steve Petty, Kyle, Mike, the Jegs.com team and everybody at Mac Tools -- they’re a badass group of people,” Coughlin said. “We’ve had a fantastic car for the last race or so. We struggled a little bit in the middle part of the first half of the season, but it’s definitely coming around."

 

It was Coughlin’s second consecutive final round appearance and 10th career win. He is currently second in points while Mike Castellan maintains the points lead after a quarterfinal finish.  (Chris Haverly photo)  [06/19/17]

Another Bartone Nostalgia Top Fuel car in the works

The Agent hears that Michael Bartone, brother of multiple Heritage Top Fuel World Champ Tony Bartone, has ordered a Nostalgia Top Fuel car to complement his newly finished Nostalgia Funny Car. The Bowe family who built the Funny Car will build the Top Fuel car too.

 

The Agent has no schedule as to where Bartone’s AA/FC will be racing. The DRO series would sure welcome another car from west of the Mississippi.  [06/19/17]

DRO AA/FC Challenge celebrates July ‘Night of Fire’ in Iowa

The DRO AA/FC Challenge presented by Hemi Parts King is coming to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on July 14-15 for the track's annual Night of Fire.

 

The DRO AA/FC series features five-second, 260-mph nitro Funny Cars racing a quarter mile distance -- something fans cannot see at the NHRA's 1,000-foot distance. Already committed to attending the race include Series points leader Paul Romine, former DRO Champ John Hale, and Texan Ronny Young driving the legendary Raymond Beadle’s “Blue Max.”

 

Also tentatively scheduled to appear will be Illinois racer Frank Ousley and his “Crop Duster” Mopar and the Vette of Iowa-based Anthony Bronge.

 

Friday night features nitro under the lights with two rounds of qualifying for the AA/FC cars and two for the Victory Nostalgia Super Stocker who will also be qualifying. The DRO Funny Cars and the Nostalgia Super Stockers will run at 6 and 8 p.m.  [06/19/17]
