Stock/Super Stock Shootout returns to Toronto

As part of the PCRichard.com NHRA Northeast Division National Open Series, the Stock/Super Stock Shootout returns June 16-18 to the Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario.

Following the success of its previous edition, this year’s event, which includes two races, has a total purse of $25,000 (USD). Presented by John Scotti Classic Cars/CDRHF.com, the Stock/Super Stock Shootout will welcome some of the best racers from Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada.

Last year, 72 cars ran in the elimination on both days. This year, there already are over 100 racers registered. Three new NHRA national record holders will compete at the event. They are Yves Perigny and Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductees Guy Desjardins and Ollie Stephan, who set national records at the PCRichard.com NHRA Northeast Division 1 National Open in May in Atco, NJ. Desjardins set the national record for the SS/EA in his 1967 Big Block Camaro, while Stephan set both ends of the NHRA Super Stock B/A with his 1971 Big Block Corvette. Veteran Super Stock racer Perigny set the NHRA national record for Super Stock GT/FA in his 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Racers coming from all over U.S. for Holley Hot Rod Reunion

Adam Sorokin and the Champion Speed Shop team, seen here at this year’s March Meet, are looking for a repeat of last year’s win at Bowling Green.

The All American Fuel Dragster coalition is set for the second NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series Top Fuel battle of 2017 at the 15th Annual Holley National Hot Rod Reunion June 15-17.

The West Coast contingent includes Mendy Fry and the High Speed Motorsports dragster, Jim Murphy in the Roland Leong-tuned “WW2” and Dusty Green in “Nitro Hemi.”

Tony Bartone and the Bartone Bros. are coming in from New York. Midwesterners Jason Greenwood, Jim Young, Paul Schultz and Tim Cullinan will try for the win, along with Atlanta’s Julius Hughes.

Tyler Hilton and his “Great Expectations III” entry are testing in Memphis prior to the Reunion where he and his family are event Honorees along with Wayne Jesel, Randy Payne, Mark Williams, Della Woods, and Grand Marshal, Eileen Daniels.

Several Funny Car teams who compete with the DRO AA/FC Challenge will also be taking part in the Hot Rod Reunion. It won’t be an official DRO race because the NHRA Heritage series has different requirements for the fuel pump and minimum weight. Among those scheduled to travel to Kentucky are Paul Romine from Indiana, Bazz Young from Wisconsin, and Greg Jacobsmeyer from St. Louis.

Krawiec to debut H-D Street Rod at Englishtown

Eddie Krawiec and longtime teammate Andrew Hines will debut the Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team’s new Harley-Davidson Street Rod at this weekend’s 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event. A project that started in earnest in January will come to fruition this weekend and Krawiec is thrilled that it is all happening at the track where he grew up racing.

“When I was looking at the calendar and figured the debut would probably fall into Englishtown, it made me excited,” said Krawiec, the current points leader. “It’s exciting moving onto a new platform and going into a completely different motorcycle line. This bike is kind of their wave of the future and to be a part of that is pretty cool. We’re transitioning to a new model after racing with the V-Rod since 2002, and we feel good about bringing out into competition.”

With a different body and chassis, Krawiec expects a learning curve with the new Harley-Davidson Street Rod, but he likes the potential of the bike. After rigorous research and development, and eight full passes leading into the weekend, Krawiec sees a bright future on the bike.

“There’s a lot more technology available to us now and it showed in the fine details,” Krawiec said. “For me, it’s just about being able to race with those things you learned. It’s still the same engine and powerplant. I would love to debut it and win, but with the competition in the class right now it’s going to be a tough task. But we’re up for the challenge, there’s no doubt about that.”

Arana Sr. goes 200 mph; can official record come at E-town?

It wasn't at an NHRA sanctioned event, but running under all the rules of the world's largest drag racing sanctioning body, NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Hector Arana Sr. broke through one of the sport's longest-standing barriers last weekend at Capitol Raceway in Maryland.

You can now call Arana "Mr. 200" because the 58-year-old from Miami became the first man to see a 200-mph pass on his time slip while testing, tuning and racing at the inaugural U.S. Pro Stock Motorcycle Open.

"We weren't even trying to run 200 mph. I was just trying to make sure the bike left the starting line well, and then we get up there and see that 200.26 on the scoreboard. It was a great feeling, but I want to do it at an NHRA event. Now that we've broken through I think we can do it very soon, hopefully in Englishtown."

He holds the track speed record at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, 199.35 mph (his career best).

PDRA starts nitro in Pro Extreme next month

As the Agent told you earlier, the PDRA will be allowing nitromethane in its Pro Extreme class. PDRA has just announced that the change will become effective at the Mid America Showdown in Indianapolis, July 13-15.

“This move is going to be great for the class, great for the racers, great for the fans,” stated PDRA’s Bob Harris. “This type of excitement is what the PDRA is all about. We are home to the quickest and fastest eighth-mile doorslammers on the planet and we plan to keep it that way.”

The PDRA has implemented just two rules in using nitromethane. First, injected nitro is allowed at 98 percent with dual mags allowed and no restriction on one fuel pump. Weight requirements are the same as screw cars at 2350 lbs. Second, Roots supercharged engines up to 14-71 are allowed no more than 40 percent nitro with one mag and no limit on fuel pump size. These are limited to 70 percent overdrive. All other rules for Pro Extreme can be found on PDRA’s competition page.

NHRA releases 2018 Mello Yello schedule

Earlier in the year than usual, the NHRA has announced their 2018 national event schedule.

The order remains almost the same as this season with the exception of the Epping and Chicago events swapping places and the Reading, PA, and St. Louis events changing spots in the Countdown to the Championship.

The Agent notes that the teams will drive almost across the country, leaving Epping to go next to Denver and the Western Swing. Good thing there are two weeks to get to the Mile-High City.

All 24 events will be aired on FS1 and selected events will be on the FOX broadcast network.
